Product Description

Ivy Weatherall is just 11 years old when her family leaves England for the promised riches of Canada's expanding West. They've come to join her uncle for the available land, the lush harvests, and the opportunity for success. But in Milorie, Saskatchewan, their dreams crumble into dust when they reach Uncle Alf's small sod hut and discover that jobs are scarce, and that they can barely make ends meet. Ivy's relatives pack up and head back to England, but to Ivy, Canada is full of wonder and beginning to feel like home. There are challenges in her new life, but Ivy's feisty character and her sense of wonder for a prairie as wide as the sea make her adventure one that readers won't easily forget. Vetted by a historical expert, this book contains maps, period illustrations/documents, and an extensive historical note.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Prairie as Wide as the Sea, May 27 2006
This review is from: Dear Canada: A Prairie as Wide as the Sea: The Immigrant Diary of Ivy Weatherall, Milorie, Saskatchewan, 1926 (Hardcover)
A Prairie as Wide as the Sea: The Immigrant Diary of Ivy Weatherall by Sarah Ellis is an excellent addition to the flawless Dear Canada book series.

Ivy Weatherall had a nice life living in London, England, along with her parents, older brother William, and the younger twins, Harry and Gladys. But the family immigrates to Canada, to a small town called Milorie in Saskatchewan. And now, Ivy must adapt to life living in a small town on the wide and flat Canadian prairies.

Sarah Ellis provides an exceptionally well-written tale of life in Canada on the prairies in 1926. Although some may criticize the book, saying it is just an account of daily life, with no one specific conflict, I still found Ivy a likable protagonist, and the book very good.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best book in the "Dear Canada" Collection . . ., Dec 2 2005
This review is from: Dear Canada: A Prairie as Wide as the Sea: The Immigrant Diary of Ivy Weatherall, Milorie, Saskatchewan, 1926 (Hardcover)
A Prairie as Wide as the Sea was the first Dear Canada book i ever read, and from when i started reading it to when i was finished... I was interested. I read this book because i loved history... and at the time, it was the only one of these books i could find (at my school) and it is JUST EXELENT. This book made me want to read more Dear Canada books, and MORE Dear Canada books, and EVEN MORE Dear Canada books!

Ivy's story/diary is very simple, easy to read and understand, yet historical, interesting and FUN - Probubly the BEST book in the "DEAR CANADA" COLLECTION!! I read this book three times, and i loved it EACH TIME i read it. I'll never get bored of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book from the Dear Canada series., Nov 8 2008
By Rebecca Herman - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dear Canada: A Prairie as Wide as the Sea: The Immigrant Diary of Ivy Weatherall, Milorie, Saskatchewan, 1926 (Hardcover)
This book is one of the Dear Canada series, which are historical novels, written in diary format, about fictional girls during different periods of Canadian history.

Eleven-year-old Ivy Weatherall's life changes forever in the spring of 1926, when her family decides to immigrate to Canada. Ivy begins a diary just before she leaves her London home. In it, she describes her journey to Canada, and then her family's life on her uncle's farm on the Saskatchewan prairie. She describes both the fun times in her new home as well as the hardships of life on the prairie such as harsh winters and the hard work of building a life there.

This book from the Dear Canada series is sure to appeal to fans of the series as well as readers who enjoy the Dear America series, also written in diary format. It's also an excellent historical novel for young readers who aren't familiar with the series but enjoy reading about life on the prairie. It wasn't my favorite Dear Canada book, but it's definitely a solid, well-researched, and enjoyable book from the series.
