Product Description
When Mary's family sides with the British against the American rebels, they are branded traitors and forced to flee their home. All they have is what they can carry with them -- and their determination and courage -- when they head north toward Canada. Along with other Loyalists they hope to start a new life in Québec, where there is land for those who have been loyal to the King. With Nothing But Our Courage: The Loyalist Diary of Mary MacDonald is my favorite book in the Dear Canada series up to date.Mary MacDonald and her Scottish family of her mother, father, grandmother, little brother Jamie, and baby sister Margaret are all Loyalists, or "Tories," the rude name that they were cruelly called and taunted by Patriots. The year is now 1783, and Mary and her family lives in fear of the Patriots in Albany, New York, now that America is free. One day, where the diary tarts, the school where Mary's father is a teacher at is burned down by Patriots. The MacDonalds are threatened, and are given a pass to make the tenuous journey through the forests and north of the border to England's territory of Canada, where they will be safe and provided for by England. As an American, I was interesting to learn even more about the Loyalists in this book. Of course, I learned some from Dear America's Love Thy Neighbor, another Loyalist book, but this gave an interesting perspective. I never knew Loyalists fled to Canada if they had not already hightailed it to England before 1783. Karleen Bradford has done an excellent job of portraying the lives of Loyalists and the aftermath of the American Revolution. Highly recommended!

A View of Loyalists' Suffering,

This is my favorite book in the Dear Canada series. The diary is written by Mary MacDonald. She and her family are mistreated by the Patriots and are forced to move to Canada and start a new home. On the way, Mary describes the long, hard and lonely journey of traveling. Once they get to their destination, they build a new cabin and meet up with Mary's brother, who was fighting against the Patriots. Will Mary's family ever consider their new place as home? If you are a fan of historical fiction, I would definitely recommend this.

As an American, I found it really interesting to read this book, about a Loyalist girl whose family has to flee to Canada after the British lose in the American Revolution, because it's not really a topic explored in many American books. Mary McDonald is a young girl who lives with her family in Albany, New York. But in 1783, after the American Revolution, the family is forced to leave their home just for supporting the British. The family decided to head for British Canada, but face many dangers along the way and in their new home. Mary describes it all in her diary. I highly reccomend this book.
