Orphan at My Door,
By ravenclaw29 (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dear Canada: Orphan at My Door: The Home Child Diary of Victoria Cope (Hardcover)
Orphan at My Door: The Home Child Diary of Victoria Cope by Jean Little was a little bit of an above-average Dear Canada book.Victoria's father is a prosperous doctor, and she and her two older brothers and parents live happily in a large manor estate in the late Victorian era in 1897, in Guelph, Ontario. But Victoria's mother is once again with child, and she has been very weak, ill, and tired most of the time, unable to do some of the housework. Thus, Victoria's father decides to get a Home Child, an orphan from England coming to Canada to do the housework or farm labor. The Home Girl's name is Mary Anna, and she and Victoria fast become friends. Victoria learns that Mary Anna deeply misses her little brother, Jasper, so the two figure a plan to find Jasper. Eventually, it all ends well. Orphan at My Door was a satisfactory, slightly above average work of historical fiction, but sometimes the action lagged and I found myself rather annoyed with young Victoria, because she seemed a bit too pampered. And Mary Anna seemed to always think that Victoria will nevert understand her or Jasper because she, Victoria, was never poor, which is partially true but not totally, as Mary Anna appears to believe. Jean Little has done an acceptable job here, but I would check out her other wonderfully excellent Dear Canada book, Brothers Far from Home, instead. Recommended.

Orphan at My Door,
This review is from: Dear Canada: Orphan at My Door: The Home Child Diary of Victoria Cope (Hardcover)
I just received this book today and finished it in one day. The book is set in the late 1800s about Home Children. Here we meet Victoria Cope, whose family takes in a twelve year old Home Girl. Readers will experience the suffering that children had to endure by moving to help other families when their own cannot support them. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves historical fiction.

This was an amazing book! Definately one of the best Dear Canada books. I read it in one day, but the only reason was because I started it in the morning and read it until 1 o'clock in the morning! It was a totally amazing book! Just WOW
