Book Description

Mar 1 2003 Dear Canada
Young Hélène St. Onge and her older sister Catherine are orphans. When King Louis XVI orders all men in New France to marry, Catherine becomes a fille du roi, one of the many young women sent to the new world as brides. Hélène will accompany her on the long sea voyage and live with her sister's new family. But Catherine dies during the grueling journey, and Hélène finds herself alone in a strange new country. New France is a far harsher place than she imagined, with bitter winters and the threat of attack from the Iroquois. Will the few friendships she has made on her long voyage enable her to survive?

I bought this book plus another 3 to go with the Dear Canada Teaching Guide that I wanted my daughter to go through. She thoroughly enjoyed all of the books. I read this book and Whispers of War and found both books to be informative and very interesting. I am planning on buying more of these for my daughter's homeschool adventure and will encourage her to keep them for a keepsake.

Format:Hardcover
Alone in an Untamed Land: The Filles du Roi Diary of Helene St. Onge is a wonderfully well-written, excellent addition to the Dear Canada series.

Helene and her older sister Catherine are orphans. The mother died while they were young, and their father has just died from smallpox---in the process leaving his daughters massive debts. The only way to pay off the debts is for Catherine to become a Fille du Roi, a young woman traveling to New France and marrying one of the French men there. But on the long boat ride over to New France, Catherine dies; and now Helene is left alone in the world with only her beloved little cuddly cat Minette left to be with her.

Although the initial summary of this tale seems depressing, Helene's diary is also full of hope, and her friendship with a half-Mohawk girl, young Kateri, and her father, Monsieur Jean Aubry. Maxine Trottier, a descendant from a Fille du Roi herself, has written a spectacular story with a glimpse into life in New France in the mid-seventeenth century.

Highly Recommended!

This Dear Canada book was my all time favorite. It was exciting but also funny especially when Helene decribes the five Maries. It paints a picture of what happened in the time of the Filles du Roi, when girls were sent from France to Quebec to marry the men and produce families. When Helene and her sister Catherine's parents die then they are not sure what to do. So Catherine becomes a Filles du Roi and her and Helene sail for Quebec. Helene just plans to be a maid for her sister but when Catherine dies on the ship, Helene is asked to take her place. Helene agrees and she becomes a Filles du Roi. On the ship, Helene also meets a indian girl called Kateri who she becomes very good friends with.
I read the epiloge first so I would know the backround and everything was comfusing. Who was Jean? I didn't know until the end of the book but all along the way I loved it anyway, and everything was straightened out at the end. So do not read the epiloge first. Even though I did, it was still fantastic and I would recommend this book to anyone even if you are not interested in this time in history.
