Review

“Greg Fitzsimmons was the first comic to ever give me unwanted advice. I thought he was a jerk. I was wrong. Not only is he a great guy, he is also one of the best storytellers I have ever heard. I look forward to someone reading this book to me.”

—Zach Galifianakis

“Jewish guilt is well-known because Jews are loud and free to express themselves. Catholic guilt, however, is fucking bottomless. Irish to the core, despite himself, this bottomlessness oozes from Greg Fitzsimmons’ every pore and it’s raw, honest, and hilarious. This portrait of one comic’s life is funny, hard, and true.”

—Sarah Silverman, comedienne and New York Times bestselling author of The Bedwetter

“I’ve often wondered what it was that made Greg Fitzsimmons so funny. And so filled with non-specific rage. Now I know, and you can, too.”

—Andy Richter, National Treasure

“Greg Fitzsimmons thinks he’s one of the greatest comedic minds of our generation; and in the case of this book, he’s right.”

—Adam Carolla, comedian

“Greg Fitzsimmons is as funny as he is f*%ed up. And he is VERY f*%ed up.”

—Jimmy Kimmel

Product Description

PARENT S: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

Greg Fitzsimmons has made a lot of what appear to be bad decisions. It’s what he was raised to do. Most parents would hide or destroy any evidence so clearly demonstrating their child’s failures, but—lucky for us—Greg Fitzsimmons’s family has preserved each mistake in its original envelope like a trophy in a case, lest he ever forget where he came from.

Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons is Greg’s life, told through this cavalcade of disciplinary letters, incident reports, and newspaper clippings that his parents received from teachers and school officials. Greg picks up where his parents left off with his own collection of letters received during college and throughout his successful career as a writer, producer, and stand-up comic. Revealing the larger story of how Greg’s distinctly dysfunctional Irish-American family bred him to blindly challenge anyone, anytime, anywhere, over anything, Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons comes full circle to show that the Fitzsimmons torch has been passed on proudly to a new generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely funny while providing deep insight into Fitz's own character, Dec 27 2010

I came to this book through Greg Fitzsimmons' comedy podcast, which is arguably one of the best comedy podcasts available right now. Fitz is an unbelievably quick wit who goes straight for the hardest, most uncomfortable angle on any personal story or anecdote and makes me laugh out loud several times in each podcast.

This book was an inspiring read, and when he discusses the more intimate details of his family life and of the effects his dad's alcoholism had on himself and his family, he goes very deep and reveals lots of important insights into his character and the nature of his dad's own suffering.

The book was a great read -- I only wish it could have lasted longer.

I know this book does not come out officially until Tuesday, however I received my copy from amazon on Saturday. I was not planning on reading it until after December 11th, which is when I am taking the LSAT. However, when I received the book in the mail I started reading it, just to get a glimpse of what I should expect. Once I started, however, I could not stop. I read the book straight through. I should be spending every possible minute studying for the LSAT, but "Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons" was simply too good to put down. The premise of the book is great, and Greg's life story is fascinating. I swear I am not exaggerating by saying that "Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons" is now my favorite book, and unlike Adam Carolla (I started listening to Greg's podcast after hearing him on Carolla's podcast), I am an avid reader. Thank you amazon for shipping me "Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons" before its official release day (which I'm sure was a mistake)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeper than it appears but also warmer and funnier., Jan 19 2011

I am new to the world of Greg Fitzsimmons having learned of him from listening to Adam Corolla's podcast and then discovering Greg's this past Fall. I read "Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons" on a recent vacation and found the book surprisingly engaging and moving. Greg is a proud Irishman, as am I, and he is also about my age, so I was eager to hear what his experience in life had been like so far. My mom always told me that as an Irish person I would never be happy. I find her words haunt me and I wonder if other Irish people suffer from this same inability to truly be happy. Greg seems like he struggled a lot to find his present happiness and it was a joy to watch him mature from an overly cocky but insecure young man into a man who gave up drinking and drugs because he wanted to be in charge of himself and the best he could be as a comedian. The book is also a bit of a love letter to his famous, deceased father who loomed large in Greg's young life and could never quite control his own demons. A good read.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big dissapointment, Feb 20 2012
By bjg - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons: Tales of Redemption from an Irish Mailbox (Hardcover)
This book was a big disappointment. Mr Fitzsimmons refuses to drop his wiseguy/toughguy persona, which renders the book just a catalog of not very funny anecdotes. The letters/report card device isn't strong enough to hold the memoir and his strange take on Irishness is a little embarrassing and reductive. If you're after something unoffensive and middle of the road you might enjoy but alas i had to give up before the end.
