Book Description

Dec 26 2006
From multi-platinum rap star C-Murder comes his debut novel--a gritty, compelling, and unforgettable story of surviving on the deadly streets of New Orleans...

There's A Time To Go Hard, And A Time To Chill...

The day the cops took his daddy away for murder, a new emotion gripped five-year-old Daquan Watson's heart: Hate. It would stay with him as he came up in The Calliope, New Orleans' most notorious, drug-infested housing projects, where every brother is a soldier goin' to war every day. Grandma Mama does her best to raise him the right way, but those streets keep calling. Trying to get ahead in such a harsh environment can make your heart turn cold--unless you learn how to listen to your guardian angel...

There's A Time To Take One For The Team...

But the violence at The Calliope is nothing compared to what Daquan experiences doing time at Scotland Correctional Center for youth, watching cats get stabbed over card games, young boys get raped, and racism of the worst kind, even from the black guards. A voice inside tells him he'd better learn to use his anger--instead of letting it use him, ya heard?

And A Time To Think For Yourself...

From the moment Daquan heard his first blast of hip hop, the music spoke to him, and for him. While his friends are getting their street hustle cracking, his way with words is leading him in another direction. With a good woman by his side, he's owning up to his responsibilities and building a new future with New Orleans' biggest rap label. But what about his homies in The CP3--will they ever be truly free? Daquan knows his hardened heart will never allow him to become a victim. He can only pray it won't allow him to become a predator...

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Read!!! March 29 2007
By Delonya Conyers {Hotchklate} - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I admit to being somewhat hesitant to purchase this book. C-Murder being a rapper does not neccesarily mean that he would be a good author. I know that rappers tell stories but those stories are done to blazing beats so my question was could C-Murder produce a blazing book? I was pleasantly surprised that he could.

Death Around The Corner managed to captivate me while telling the tale of Daquan who's struggling to survive being poor in New Orleans'Calliope projects. The typical urban formula is apparent in the book, tragic childhood breeds contempt for law enforcement which in turn spurns a life of crime. But what makes Death Around The Corner rise above similar books was it's ability to portray a moral message to it's readers.

A message so clearly depicted that I'll be happily requiring my teenage son to read this book to help spark a positive dialogue about life choices. A dialogue that a C-Murder album could never inspire which definately proves that this rapper can provide a service to young black men.

By Books2Mention Magazine - Published on Amazon.com
"Death Around The Corner is an outstanding read. It distributes a hard dose of reality in the hood."

"At the tender age of five Daquan Watson witnesses a murder committed by his father, who ends up in prison for life. His mother is a drug addict and soon abandons him, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother."

"Unfortunately, Daquan is exposed to drug dealing from his cousin Jerome. He has aspirations of becoming a rapper, but decides to deal drugs for a while until he can get his music career started."

"A drug bust occurs and Jerome is sent to prison. Daquan is asked to step in and run things for Jerome with his connection Mandi."

"As Daquan becomes deeply involved in the drug game, one of his buddies becomes envious. Just when Daquan gets a chance to sign with No Limit Records as a rap artist and decides to stop selling drugs, his best friend Nut turns on him and his life is put in jeopardy."

"The message is definitely clear in this dramatic tale. Death can truly be around the corner for those who get caught up in this deadly game."

"Corey "C-Murder" Miller does an awesome job depicting this gritty tale. He paints this story so vividly that readers can't help but to visualize it and learn from it. This urban novel is an absolutely riveting read that tells it like it is, straight with no chaser."

5.0 out of 5 stars It Ain't Enough to Be Good Dec 22 2007
By OOSA Online Book Club - Published on Amazon.com
In an instant, young Daquan Watson's world was turned upside down. One act of violence has shattered the family life he once knew. Now living with Grandma Mama in The Calliope Projects, Third Ward, a notorious, drug-infested housing projects, it's just a matter of time before the lure of the streets is too much to resist. With death around every corner, will Daquan escape?

And with that, DEATH AROUND THE CORNER heads off into a violent, complicated, gritty and fascinating storyline. Books about the hood appear in a steady flow today and the flow just seems to continue to increase. However, quantity does not make up for quality. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER beats the odds. C-Murder's gripping account of one young man's experiences adds immeasurably to one's understanding of the challenges faced by many of our black youth. Its setting is rich in local color and local characters. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER proves to be exciting, with a jaw-dropping climax. Multi-platinum rapper C-Murder takes a gamble and wins, so does the reader. Maybe he can do for New Orleans literary what his brother Master P has done for New Orleans ' rap scene. Highly recommend. Looking forward to Tru Publishing.

I cannot believe that I slept on this book for so long. From the first to the last page it grips you. C-Murder has some serious talent in the writing game, I can not wait to see what he has in store for us next and with his new publishing label. I will be buying anything he drops. This book deserves more than five stars. ONE of the best books I have ever read! Pick this book up you will not be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Risks in Living Life on the Streets March 21 2007
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers - Published on Amazon.com
When tragedy strikes at a young age, Daquan's life is changed forever. He becomes overwhelmed with anger and hate, which drive him to a life on the streets. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER is the story of Daquan's life as he goes from an innocent young man into a cold blooded killer. He starts off stealing with his best friend Nut, but eventually follows in the footsteps of his cousin, selling drugs, and getting kicked out of his Grandma Mama's house. Soon he finds himself in the Scotland Correctional Center where he learns even more about how to live on the streets, but also develops a love for hip hop.

While in the facility he meets Cee, another inmate whose brother owns a record shop and is in the process of starting his own label. Daquan leaves the facility with Cee's information and a promise to reconnect in the future, but for the time being he returns to life on the streets. Back on the streets he is reunited with Nut and they become big time drug dealers with the instincts of killers. However, when Daquan runs into Cee his focus shifts back to the music, leaving Nut and the rest of the crew behind. The question is, can he really leave the street life behind or will it catch up with him?

In DEATH AROUND THE CORNER, C-Murder has crafted a tale that not only delves into street life but shows the experiences of life in a correctional facility as well. It is a chilling tale with some graphic descriptions that will keep the reader turning the pages to see what happens next. C-Murder has written the novel in a way that makes it is easy for the reader to engage with the characters and imagine the story as it moves along. Not only is DEATH AROUND THE CORNER an intriguing fictional tale, it also warns the reader of the consequences of living life on the streets.
