Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

De Phazz are a Heidelberg-based combination of composers, arrangers, musicians and vocalists who play their own mixture of easy listening, cool jazz, Brazilian exotica--and even a splash of dancehall reggae when they feel like it. Death By Chocolate is actually a little less playful than their last album Godsdog. The humorous samples are still there but remain more in the background, while the foreground is taken up by quirky but lovable music and witty lyricism. The anchors of the project are producer Pit Baumgerter, songwriter Pat Appleton and composer Otto Engelhard, though the featured artists run to about 20 personnel and cover a wide variety of bizarre names and great instruments. There's a love of irony and irresistible, feel-good music throughout this album that keeps it buoyant and captivating throughout. And the range of sounds and moods is quite dazzling: gleeful, insouciant humour on "Something Special ("You' re So Special--Just Like Anybody Else" sings Appleton), subtle reggae licks on Nu Chic and Sabbatical, upbeat club thumps on "Better Now", downtempo jazz of the title track and overt bossa rhythms and French lyrics of Jeunesse Doreé. A little like being at a retro cocktail party, sipping on outrageously decorated drinks and indulging in flirtatious lounge chat, Death By Chocolate is certainly a good way to go. --Paul Sullivan

5.0 out of 5 stars One of these things is JUST like the other!, Mar 4 2004
This review is from: Death By Chocolate (Audio CD)
If you like the retro-vocal melancholy, jazzy, cafeteria-style, insular-yet-panoramic, lush, smoky-lounge, orchestral, strange, ecstatic, DJ-scratchy, sublime, sampled and genre-bending compostions of Art of Noise, The Matthew Herbert Big Band, Enzso, Funki Porcini, Yello, Caleb's Cosmosis, Hugh Marsh, Future Sound of London, United Future Organization or Bowery Electric, then you will love this.

'NUFF SAID.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most significant discovery in years, Feb 26 2004

De Phazz are simply the most exciting group I have heard in what seems like a lifetime. Theirs is music at its best, the kind that everyone at our parties asks "what IS this music, it is fabulous". Do yourself a favour - if you want music that is varied in style, 99% brilliant, 100% easy on the ears, and very, very smooth, buy this album. After that, I expect you will investigate their other offerings, "Godsdog" being of similar quailty.
