4.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable on several levels, April 22 2007

the opening sentence was worth the price of the book. the author has a wonderful way with words and an entertainingly wry and ironic attitude. she also has a wonderful way with character and dialogue.

the plot is better than average for a first mystery, with clues fairly presented. still, experienced mystery readers will probably guess the culprit's identity. however, the motivation is interesting and believable.

i enjoyed it enough to read the next in the series.

Radley's first novel in this series has a couple of things going for it. First of all, she does a beautiful job describing life in rural England. She really does this well.

Two, the interplay between the young educated up and coming Tait and his boss, the uneducated Quantrill has a fair amount of dynamic tension, and there is a lot of room to take this forward in the series to some interesting places.

However, the book is marred seriously by several giveaways that suggest who the really killer is way too early. I had strong suspicions by the first third and was certain of who it was half way through. Radley would have done better with half the clues exposed she did.

I'm generally a fan of the Fellony and Mayhem crimer series, but this is one of the weaker entries in it.
