Product Description

From Amazon.com

Disc One of Death to the Pixies is the random-button scrambling of the Pixies' studio discs; Disc Two is a convincing live show that repeats a few of the songs and still doesn't make you feel that you've heard too much. There are, of course, plenty of arguments to be made for the band's original sequencing, but since the Pixies are as adept at pop hooks as they are at punk screech, the set works to freshen songs you know well--an effective reintroduction to a group that perhaps sounds even greater now than it did when making an LP a year in the late '80s and early '90s. Gigantic indeed. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars This Monkey's Gone to Heaven, Nov 4 2003

This was my first introduction to the Pixies, and I have to say it rocks! You get both studio and live versions of their greatest songs ("This Monkey's Gone to Heaven," "Where is My Mind," etc.) While the Pixies experts might dispute that these are their "best" songs, almost all of them are undeniably great.

The live album is definitely better-- it's amazing how Black Francis goes from enraged screeching to heavy breathing to playful singsong. The live show has way more energy than anything I've heard on the Pixies studio albums too.

Highly recommended for all fans of the new bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes... see how it's really done by the original masters!

This is a great collection. It's one disc of "hits", and one excellent live disc. However it's out of print, so you can only get it as an import or used. BUT, there is a new 23 track "Best Of" coming out, that includes everything from "Bone Machine" to "Alec Eiffel", and a "Neil Young" cover. I'd wait for that. They're touring too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Cent, Dec 14 2003

While one may be better off actually buying the albums themselves for the songs contained on the first disc, as many have mentioned, the price tag on here is worth it just for the live second disc. If you think someone may like the Pixies, or that someone needs to, this is probably one of the best ways to go. Have them listen to the first disc a few times so they pick up on some of the more popular songs (Monkey, Mind?) and then let em experience the live fusion of noise on the second disc. However, ui you have any of the actual albums, say Surfer Rosa, you may want to let them borrow that first.

Of course, it is near impossible to ever cover the Pixies on one disc, but this does do it rather well as a somewhat decent introduction. For the avid Pixies fan, it truly is only worth the second disc. The setlist for the live second disc isn't what I would have chosen, but the band puts on a good peformance. Its nice to hear Black Francis be able to scream while being a few feet away from the mic. Studio production just loses when compared to a live recording. We don't have a producer putting their influence into the structure of the songs (though this is not inherently bad).

While the first disc is lacking some areas, it is still nice to have a Pixies disc that plays for over 45 minutes. In fact, you get two on this package! Can't go wrong with these discs as an introduction as it doesn't cover all the best material and later on you can find out what they are. :P
