5.0 out of 5 stars Della Cooks Mystery, Number Two, Feb 20 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Death Takes the Cake (Mass Market Paperback)
Della Carmichael owns a little cooking school in Santa Monica, California, and stars in a new cable cooking show on the Better Living Channel. Mickey Jordan hires his son, Addison, as sort of a cable TV executive in charge of strategic planning. For publicity, Della reluctantly agrees to be one of the contestants in a televised cake competition. It is sponsored by Reggi-Mixx, a cake mix that is well known for leaving a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who actually dares to eat it. The contestants may only use the horrible mix as they strive to create the most delicious desert and claim the twenty-five thousand dollar prize.

To make matters a bit tense, the owner of Reggi-Mixx is Regina Davis, an old college nemesis. Della cannot help but wonder if Regina plans to seek revenge for something that happened between them over twenty years ago. At the same time, one of her two best friends is having husband problems and Della is unsure about her own current boyfriend. But when Della finds someone drowned in a mixing bowl of Reggi-Mixx, Della needs everyone's help...even though it looks as if one of the closest people around Della is a killer.

***** Author Melinda Wells shows how some people can hold a grudge forever in this mystery/police story. Though this is the second in the series, you do not have to read the first to fully enjoy this story. All the recipes mentioned in this tale are also included in the back of the book, just as those in the first story were. Personally, I think buying all the books for the recipes alone are well worth the price (and the mysteries are a very sweet bonus indeed!) Alas, readers buy mystery books for the actual mysteries. Who knew? Therefore, I am tickled pink to have enjoyed this story and proud to highly recommend it to all mystery lovers. This one will test your investigative skills! *****

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner, Feb 26 2009
By Arkay - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Death Takes the Cake (Mass Market Paperback)
Miss Wells second book in the Della Cooks mystery series is another winner. Because Della is portrayed as a "real" person and some accidents do occur in the kitchen (like pulling the mixer out of the basin before turning off the power - something I would probably do), even a non-cook like myself is encouraged to try some of the recipes noted in the book.

This story revolves around Della agreeing to take part in a cooking contest even though she knows the contest is sponsored by an old
college acquaintance who had promised retribution for exposing a past
offense.

Old friends from the first book, Liddy and Bill, Shannon and Big John,
Eileen and NDM together with Mickey and Iva Jordan make a reappearance in
this book and round out the story.

I for one hate having to wait another year for the next installment -
The proof is in the pudding. Keep up the good work and write faster please, Melinda.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Takes The Cake is a "must read" for mystery lovers, Mar 23 2009

If you love a good mystery - then you will love Death Takes The Cake by Melinda Wells. The characters in the book come alive as if they were actually real. The plot carries you through the book with anticipation and guessing who killed Reggie. Bravo! to Ms. Wells for the excellent writing. Too bad the highest rating score is only 5. It should be a 10. This is a must read for mystery lovers- and not only mystery lovers, but for anyone who loves to read. Awaiting the next Della book.

This author is a new read for me. The plot moved along and the characters were believable. It's a cozy so I was not expecting anything earth shattering in the writing department, but it was a good book none the less. I will buy more of her books in the future. I didn't try her recipes that are included in the book.
