I always wanted to see this movie for years. I remember that infamous VHS cover art from the poster. But some of the video stores only had this movie in french. Sometimes, they would show it on the TBS SuperStation late at night but i would miss it from the beginning. Since Scream (Shout!) Factory are releasing the movie to a Blu-ray/DVD Combo. I was happy to finally watch the movie. Was i disappointed ? Nope, i did like this little thriller.

Young Billy (Peter Billingsley) is sad that his parents are divorced (Edward Herrmann and Catherine Hicks). Billy rather spin time with his father than his mother. Especially his mother going back to Arizona for an vacation, bringing his son and Billy has to meet his mother's new boyfriend (Paul Le Mat). The vacation goes well, although Billy has a tough time warming up to his mother's new boyfriend. When Billy goes to an RV that is empty in a old mining place. He finds an unusual frog pendant on the floor on the RV. But when his mother and her boyfriend stops at a resturant to eat. A mysterious waiter (Stephen McHattie) recognized the frog pendant on Billy's hand. Now this waiter is slowly stalking the family and especially Billy.

Directed by Dick Richards ("Farewell, My Lovely", "March or Die") made an better than expected little thriller. It is made watchable, thanks to a bright performance by Billingsley. Who is a natural actor, who is just as he good was he was in "Bob Clark's A Christmas Story". McHattie is also quite good as the calmest psychopath, you will ever see on a movie. The movie didn't really have an wide release, when it came out in 1982. But the movie has an loyal cult following over the years.

DVD has an fine anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an good digitally remastered Dolby Digital 5.

"Do you wanna play? Okay, I'll play with you" March 14 2003

Those were the innocent words of Billy to a madman who was intent on killing him! This movie was really good and I remember seeing it when I was in junior high school. I haven't seen it since and have been searching for the video for the longest time. Yeah, it's dated 80's fare, but IGNORE that! The storyline is cool and a small boy who is smart enough to outwit the killer time and again in ANY way possible. It was like playing cat and mouse. The line quoted in the title shows that Billy believes that this maniac is just "playing" with him, unaware that his life was in danger. When he DOES realize it in the movie, he has more wits than an adult!!! This movie was cool back then and I'm SO GLAD to add it to my movie collection! It is one of those RARE thrillers that do not show a bunch of blood, gore and just a tad of nudity. Also, the scenery was LOVELY!!!

Long Over Looked Slasher Gem now on Blu Ray Dec 30 2006
By Dayna Newman/Slasher Diva - Published on Amazon.com

"Death Valley" is by far one of my favorite 80's slasher flicks,
The plot is very believable and the acting is above par with actors such as Paul Le Mat'The Burning Bed',Catherine Hicks' Childs Play',Peter Billingsley 'A Christmas story' and Stephen McHattie who is perfect as the slasher.

A mother and son go to Death Valley with The mother's new boyfriend hoping that the son and her new Beau will make nice with each other. The boy is very inquisitive and nosy resulting in him getting too close for comfort to a Serial killer who's very handy with a switchblade.

It becomes a cat and Mouse game between the two all the while he is trying to get the adults to believe him.It isn't a gore fest the kills are good, effective and the action and suspense are superb. There is a little some comic relief in the form of an obese babysitter who manages to wrangle all the kids candy and food away from him,her question of the night "Are You Going To Eat That?" am delighted that this Gem is now on not just DVD but Blu Ray.
it's a 5 Star film.

Pretty good movie June 21 2001
By Roy Levins - Published on Amazon.com
I don't know about most people but I tend to like this 1 star movie for once. I think its great Its not boring at any time, and its not dull its just a good movie not scary. When it was released in 1982 it received horrible reviews. Thsi is Peter Billingsley's first movie he is the kid who is in the all time favorite christmas movie " A Christmas Story" as if like nobody knew that. It has a great cast though Paul lemat, the mother from Childs Play, The guy from the quaker oats commercials, and many more. Country western movie I like those kinds of movies when they go out of the city and film in the desert I just like the movie and its not shakespeare or anything the acting is just like any regular person would act a good movie though.

Long Lost Movie April 24 2002
By Chris Redfield - Published on Amazon.com
I have search high and low for a new copy of this without spending a fortune. Nonetheless, I had to go with used for a small price. The reason I like this film is I remember seeing it when I was a young kid and I like the desert, out of cities movies. This is a great family vaction slash horror flick. The acting is not so great but the story and flow of the movie keeps you going. I hope to see this one come to DVD.

3.5 STARS: "You got a hollow door here, Billy, made in Japan." -Mr. Peterson Sept. 22 2005
By HorrorMan - Published on Amazon.com
You know it's interesting to me when I think about some of the trash that gets put on DVD, but here is one of the better 80s slasher flicks in "Death Valley" with damn good acting and a really good story but you cannot find on DVD!?!? Indeed, this is an 80's slasher classic lost in the midst of DVD garbage...lost, indeed, but not forgotten. Why is it that movies like this one don't get put on DVDs?

"Death Valley" is about a mother, her boyfriend and her child, Billy, (played well by that kid who played Ralphie in "A Christmas Story"-Bill Billingsly I think) who go on a vacation out west. Billy comes across something that he should not have and what ensues is a deadly cat and mouse game between the young boy and a vicious killer. This movie has a nice little twist which is sure to surprise you if not shock you. "Death Valley" is unique for its type and the kills are pretty good, especially the babysitter by the drink machine and the guy in the camper...lot's of throat-slitting in this one as this was the killer's modus operandi so to speak...that was well done. Maybe even more than that, "Death Valley" has a plot, and does attempt some character development along with a subplot about Billy's shaky relationship with his mother's boyfriend.

"Death Valley" is a strong THREE STARS to 3.5 STARS horror flick true to the slasher genre or sub-genre if you will, but this movie has great acting for a slasher flick, nice character development, good plot and a nice scary atmosphere to accentuate horror...this movie is no "Halloween" by any means, but I've seen garbage on DVD before, so why not a good movie like this? Last time I saw this movie, it was on USA when they used to have horror movies that came on late Saturday nights...oh, the good ole days! LET'S START THE CHANT NOW: WE WANT DVD, WE WANT DVD, WE WANT DVD!!!!! I hope I'm not the only one chanting because "Death Valley" is a pretty good little horror movie.
