5.0 out of 5 stars Victoire (Mme Vernet) is certainly not an idle wife!, Jun 20 1999

This review is from: Death Wears a Crown: A Mme. Vernet Investigation (Paperback)
After devouring the first Mme Vernet mystery set in Napoleonic Egypt, I immediately began the second one...that was 4 years ago and I still count "Death Wears a Crown" one of my all time faviourite mysteries. The appeal can be instantly seen; a)a wonderful heroine with spirit and courage, the ever indominable Victoire, b)a fearless husband,Lucien , and c)actions and plots to die for (please excuse that well used idium). The setting is Napoleonic France in the early part of the 19th Century. A turbulent place and time to be in as English and Aristos spies infiltrate the borders in an attempt to kill the First Consul himself, Napoleon, on the his day of coronation to be emperor. It is up to the resourcefulness (sorry about the speeling)and the "little gray cells" of Victoire Vernet to foil this murderous plot. As the date of the coronation inches closer, time is running out for Victoire--who are the spies and who are the good officers? Fans of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" will find a surprise in the character of Colonel Sir Sackett-Hartley. This is not to be missed, a thoroughly exciting mystery, infact, I love this book so much that I've read it half a dozen times in four years. ENJOY!
