A death of my interest!,
By
This review is from: Death's Daughter (Mass Market Paperback)
The book follows the exploits of the main character Calliope Reaper-Jones. Her father is death and he and his board of executives oversee things at Death Inc. Calliope no longer remembers this though because she has cast a spell of forgetting on herself so that she can live a normal life. Her father, sister and his board of executives are kidnapped however creating turmoil as the position of death goes vacant. At this point the spell upon her is shattered by her family because she has to take her fathers job so that the board does not remove the families immortality and kick them out of the palatial mansion bestowed upon her father for his work. Calliope after a fair amount of coaxing and whining agrees to take over the job and goes on to meeting in which she is assigned three tasks by retired gods who oversee the appointment of death. She proceeds to bumble her way through the three tasks and have a confrontation with the nefarious individuals that kidnapped her father and sister in the first place.First off I will start with the positives. The story concept was well thought out. I enjoyed the interplay of gods and death and the devil etc. So world building as I like to call it was a plus. soooo thats it for my positives. Basically the thing that I couldn't get over was the main character in the book. The idea of a character who is the daughter of death and destined to be the next in line is an appealing one but unfortunately Calliope is not someone you want to be saving the world. I tried to get a sense of how old she was supposed to be and in many ways it was hard because she often sounded like a fifteen year old girl. Some of the cheesy things that she says include. "Don't you dare laugh all condescendingly at me you jerkoid," 'Jarvis just stared at me like i was supposed to know what the hell he was talking about. I was at a total loss. I mean, I'm a fashionista, for God's sake. Ask me about Hermes and I could tell you a thing or two, But Hades? I knew it was greek for Hell, but otherwise, I had absolutely no idea.' 'No way have you stymied this white girl!' (Kali one of the people who is testing her for the job of death calls her this all the time but it comes off so cheesy. I am not sure if Amber Benson was drawing on her Buffy days for this material but it was filled with one liners and ditzy comments in the face of danger. Not to mention that the main character Calliope gets credit for being brave and talking on these jobs (the three tasks she must complete to become death) but each task is essentially completed by someone else Daniel the devil's protege or Kali. Essentially she doesn't really do anything but pout cry complain and lust basically after every good looking guy in the book including the behinds of two Annubis headed men she is following. I think its not a bad book but unfortunately I couldn't get over my dislike of the main character.

Death daughter is a very well written book, which a well done story.Twist and surprising events are many, supporting a very original and rich story. The main character Calliope is both funny and courageous hero, which is better that what she thinks of her-self. Mythology are well introduce, allowing anyone to get into it easily and to enjoy the story. Very good book!!!! :)

I didn't had any particular expectations when I started to read Death's Daughter. I hope it would be good, but it turned out to be a really great book. Funny, witty with a great balance between comedy and angst. A must-read!
