Knitters will rediscover their passion for knitting with these 19 refreshingly original sweaters, coats, and accessories by renowned designer Deborah Newton. The designs offer something for every creative mood and fashion need, whether casual, dressy, elegant, or fun. Stylish, curvy cables characterize a classic cardigan, a cropped sweater, a lush mohair hoodie, a hobo-style shoulder bag, a beret with matching fingerless gloves, and other exciting designs. Deborah offers knitters such professional details as toggle closures, raglan sleeves, cap sleeves, zippers, slit pockets, and more. The 19 projects are a cabled toggle coat; cable textured cardigan; simple oversized raglan; easy beret and fingerless gloves set; textured pullover with center cables; lush mohair hoodie; boxy jacket; zipped cabled vest; classic dressy raglan; short cabled cardigan; hobo-style shoulder bag; simple garter pullover with bell sleeves; summer boatneck; cabled lace panel pullover; easy family sweaters (three styles for men, women, and children, with texture and stripes); and shawl-collared jacket for winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cable Knitting Book, Feb 12 2011

This book came in record time, and it is now one of my favorite cable knitting books. The patterns are "involved" but not so difficult that a fairly new knitter could not do some of them. There are fancy patterns and plain patters. Something for beginner to advanced knitter. Wonderful book!

The book contains several sweaters I am interested in making and not just one--which is usually the case with knitting books. I recomment it for experienced knitters

2.0 out of 5 stars depends on size range, Oct 27 2010

This review is from: Deborah Newton's Cable Collection (Paperback)
The book includes a nice variety of mostly women's sweater patterns. (One "family" style did have a man's and child's version also.) There's also a hat/glove set and a bag. I'd say the book is intended for someone who already has some basic experience with cables. Although there are some basic knitting techniques with good illustrations in an appendix at the back, the book doesn't go into cabling techniques. It really is simply a pattern book - a "collection."

I wasn't looking for anything more than that. The only reason the book doesn't rate high with me personally is that the sizes labeled "small" were rather large (several at 38"-42"). I recall only one exception - a 33.5" small, but that was intended to be worn with negative ease. (Most published patterns I've seen seem to consider a 34-36" max a small; 38"-42" seems wide even for the more boxy jacket styles.)

While, of course, one can recalculate everything to make whatever size is needed,I prefer not to have to do too much of that when I purchase patterns (vs. design one from scratch). So, whether you'll find this book a good addition to your library probably depends on what sizes you're planning to knit for yourself and others, and/or how much time you want to put into making alterations when necessary! I was dissapointed I had to pass on making some nice styles simply due to the sizing the designer chose.
