From Publishers Weekly

Sykes picks up where the prospective-husband hunters of her bestselling 2004 debut, Bergdorf Blondes, left off: "Married girls in New York these days put almost as much effort into losing husbands as they once did into finding them." When Sylvie Mortimer's husband, Hunter, gets called away for business on the second day of their Mexican honeymoon, Sylvie meets fellow Manhattanite Lauren Blount, in town for her divorce honeymoon, and Lauren takes the abandoned newlywed under her wing. Back in New York, Sylvie, working on the cheap for fashion designer friend Thackeray Johnston, brings a grounded perspective to Lauren's world of the rich, well-connected and freshly single, a world of theme parties (divorce showers, power christenings) and modest goals (make out with five men before Memorial Day, hook up their own surround sound). Meanwhile, Hunter's blossoming career as a television producer makes him a prime target for "husband huntresses," including his notorious co-worker Sophia D'Arlan. With Hunter acting secretive, Sophia popping up everywhere and Lauren egging her on, Sylvie sees her own divorce shower in the works. Though characters are as complex as the labels they wear and dialogue tends toward observations like "I want to be Lindsey Lohan most of the time, don't you?" Sykes's Bergdorf formula is still light, wicked, name-dropping fun. (May)

From AudioFile

Sonya Walger immerses the listener in this audio with her clear voice and British accent. Lauren, a wealthy New York divorcŽe, is on her divorce honeymoon when she meets Sylvia, a British woman who is on her wedding honeymoon--alone--because of her husband's work commitments. Walger capably switches from Sylvia's British accent to Lauren's more nasal American tones. Lauren's voice is filled with inflection and a touch of humor as she takes her wealth and recent divorce in stride. As Sylvia finds herself amid Manhattan's Debutante Divorcees, her developing distrust in her new husband is revealed in her hesitant voice. Walger's skilled character differentiation helps listeners enjoy a clever story. 4.0étoiles sur 5 Fun and Light! Perfect for the beach!, Déc 18 2007
This review is from: The Debutante Divorcee (Paperback)
Sykes novel is delightful, funny and light. Anyone expecting or accustomed to Chomsky will soon be disappointed. I looked to this book, as something fun, a follow up to the Shopaholic books because I had read many of them and enjoyed each and every one of them. I have recommended this book to my friends as the perfect vacation book! Something fun to read by the beach or before bed. A humorous and light distraction is necessary once in a while in light of the world we live in, with all of its complexities. Young women shouldnt shy away from this tale about marriage and friendship despite some of the harsh criticism its received. Enjoy! I look forward to reading her other books.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Divorce it!, Fév 23 2007

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Debutante Divorcee (Paperback)
Just when you think that Plum Sykes had hit chick-lit's bottom with the appallingly "Bergdorf Blondes," she lowers the bar. In this case, the bar is lowered for the idiotic chick-lit soap opera "Debutante Divorcee," all about the antics of brainless divorcees and a neurotic new wife. The fun never ends.

Sylvie and Hunter are on their honeymoon when Hunter's business calls him away, leaving Sylvie to sulk over his absence. She finds some comfort in cavorting with the "Debutante Divorcees," glamorous creatures who get married and divorced in the blink of an eye. Sylvie is the one married girl in the bunch, and she plans to stay that way.

But soon she begins to suspect that Hunter is cheating on her -- tabloid pictures, clashing reports, and a sultry coworker known for hunting hubbies and breaking up marriages. While globe-hopping with her new pal Lauren (who is flinging with Russian stars, teenage boys and "Mr. Five Orgasms"), Sylvia gathers clues that may lead to her marriage's destruction.

When a woman announces "I want to be Lindsey Lohan most of the time, don't you?", you know you're in for a stupid ride, full of celebrity name-dropping, couture clothing, and people who are worrying about their designer dresses at a funeral. It's like the Barbie games that little girls play, only more dull to read about.

Sykes still can't really piece together a real plot, and so "Debutante Divorcee" basically adds up to a string of loosely connected subplots, some of which she seems to be making up as she goes along. The dialogue is self-consciously ditzy, and sadly, very few of the convoluted plot twists come as any surprise.

The most unbelievable plot twist comes by the finale, and it has to do with the DDs themselves. The massive personality defects that broke up the DDs' first marriages suddenly evaporate by the end... for no good reason. Does she expect anyone to think these relationships are going to last more than a week or two?

And his time around, Sykes tries to make us like her characters, but alas, she doesn't know HOW. The DDs are vapid, skanky and ditzy, despite Sykes' attempts to convince us that they're goodhearted, and Sylvie is a suggistable neurotic mess who can't stand up to her cardboard "perfect" hubby.

Torn between Prince Charming and marriage cynicism, Plum Sykes tries to combine the two and comes up with a vapid mess. Forget "Debutante Divorcee" -- get this annulled.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Chic Lit for the trendy and stylish!, Mai 23 2006
Par NYC Devotee (Toronto, Ontario) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: Debutante Divorcee (Hardcover)
A perfect light, fun, chic lit, beach read.
While I enjoyed Plum Sykes' first novel, 'Bergdorf Blondes', I absolutely loved her second novel, 'The Debutante Divorcee'. This book is like a fabulous travel guide for the trendy and stylish. I found the main character to be very likeable and just the right personality to be our tour guide. There were a couple of cute, intertwined plot lines that moved the book along from one divine exotic location to the next. I was fortunate enough to have read this novel while I was in NYC so I followed along for tea at the Carlyle, lunch at Pastis and cocktails at Bungalow 8.
I look forward to reading Plum Sykes' next novel!

1.0étoiles sur 5 Not a very good read
I wouldnt spend the money on this hardcover release. Although I found Bergdorf Blondes to be amusing, this new novel was not good at all. Read more
