As AFI rode onto mainstream radio playlists with their gleaming major label debut, Sing the Sorrow, the rumble of disenchanted fans nearly drowned out that of their dark-hued music. But the heavily-tattooed San Francisco band aren't looking back on Decemberunderground, a slickly-produced, MTV-friendly disc brimming with sinister pop charms. The opening "Prelude 12/21" sets the upbeat tone with handclaps, strings, and a cheeky glam-rock stomp. AFI might still operate in that distinct area where punk, goth, and frightening stadium rock come together, only now they seem intent on crashing the retro '80s party attended by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, with flashy tracks such as "Miss Muder" and the synth-heavy "Love Like Winter." "The Interview," meanwhile, is the closest Davey Havok has ever come to crooning a lighter-waving epic. Despite the odd lapse into the Cookie Monster metal territory of their early days ("Kill Caustic," "Affliction"), Decemberunderground is even more ambitious than its predecessor. First comes the backlash, then comes the platinum. --Aidin Vaziri

Product Description

Decemberunderground is the long awaited follow up to 2003's platinum breakthrough album Sing the Sorrow. With each new release since their 1991 debut, AFI has delivered the unexpected and have once again defied predictability by infusing new elements into their already uniquely powerful sound. Decemberunderground, produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day, blink-182), is the end result of some two years of hard work by a band determined to reclaim their position as modern rock's preeminent innovators and shows a depth, scope and passion all to uncommon in most contemporary efforts. As one of the most popular groups to emerge from traditional hardcore roots AFI have amassed a die-hard fan base, The Despair Faction, which is nothing short of cult-like and the anticipation they feel for this album reverberates for anyone who is eager to know where rock music is heading. A groundbreaking release, an incendiary live show, a fanatical following. Decemberunderground is here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited Release Jun 6 2006
Format:Audio CD
Although not what is expected by many older AFI fans, Decemberunderground represents another bold growth for the band. From hardcore old school sounding Kill Caustic, to more retro feeling songs like Love Like Winter, Decemberunderground displays the amazing versitility of Davey Havoks voice and the musical styles of the band. Overall an amazing album!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars erm what? Jun 6 2006
Format:Audio CD
this album is amazing. flat out amazing. yes this cd isn't as dark as this bands previous releases, it is in fact rather, if you will, white sounnding. i find that this 'white' sound adds to the songs title - decemberunderground - and fits in smoothly with the constant clean white appearance of the art involved with this release.

people out there say they don't like it because it's different then what AFI used to be, well here's some news for these people - bands grow and develop new sound overtime. yes true, this band started off as an amazing hardcore band and now have moved onto this new 'white' sound. but every band - that wants to do music for a living and actually make money in the process - has to grow and develop their sound over time. even some of the most punk bands sound has changed - rancid, ,still punk but less punk then what they were, distillers, greenday, etc...sometimes the growth of sound works well for the band - like rancid and AFI and greenday - but other times the sound doesn't work out the way the band wants - blink 182 - people who do not appreciate the idea that their favourite band isnt going to always make hardcore song after hardcore song, then that means they dont truely appreciate the band and the music they are making. it shows they are afraid of change.

people will also say that Davey's vocals aren't as strong this time around, well, if they knew any history of the band they would know that with sing the sorrow he pushed his vocal sound to new extremes which led to him damaging his throat and needing surgery therefore leading to his new vocal sound.

if one listens closely to the instrumentals of the songs, one will hear teh ghosts of AOD or BSITS more then one could with STS. This album is by far more 'white' sounding then other attempts, but is also the most reminiscent of those other attempts.

the lyrics are strong, the strongest davey has written in a very long time. this is a great listen so go listen to it now! =)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best alternative albums of '06 July 1 2006
Format:Audio CD
Decemberunderground is by far my favourite album of 2006. Every song is excellent on the album. However, decemberground is not AFI's best album. I prefer afi's older stuff, but I think decemberunderground is better than sing the sorrow. If you're an avid alternative rock listener, you will LOVE this album. Decemberunderground is filled with songs that are just waiting to be singles. Songs like the infectious 80's retro vibe "Love Like Winter" and "The Missing Frame" sets the album apart from other alternative records. Prelude 12/21 is a great opener, but I think most afi fans would agree it's not their best "prelude/opener" compared to "Keeping out of direct sunlight" and "Misare Cantare" I think its great that AFI experimented with different musical elements throughout the album because it proves they want to create something new and refreshing. So go out and buy this album because it's truly a piece of art. In conclusion, I only have one more thing left to say... and that is... I can't wait to see what AFI can come up with NEXT.
