First let me say, do NOT judge this book by its cover.
This is the story of Nuela, an orphan who has dedicated her life to raising her younger sister. When her sister is sent upon her kalinerre (a coming of age rite), Nuela follows shortly thereafter, discovering that her world is vastly different from what she thought. The sea beckons, and Nuela reluctantly is pulled into its magical grasp.
I have had this book for years and read it regularly. My only regret??? That there is no sequel!

This book was enjoyable, but a bit odd. I felt like I was missing a huge chunk of the story the whole time, as the author does not do a very good job of explaining what is going on. I re-read the first chapters, thinking that I may have missed something, but apparently not... I had to make a lot of assumptions, which made this more of a confusing than engrossing read.

My copy is in tatters.
I need to get a new one.
I wish she had written more books.
