Either remastered or SHM-CD... I A/B'd!,
By Glen Burg "distantshore" (the Maritimes of Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Definitive Collection Box Set (Audio CD)
I bought my copy of the box set at a music chain here in Canada. The box clearly said it was made in Japan, but was sold by Warner Music Canada. I hesitated upon buying it because it made no reference to SHM-CD or remastering. Having "The Complete Studio Recordings" box set (re: the box with the wraparound picture of the inside of a zeppelin), I wasn't sure if I wanted to plunk down almost $200 for another copy of all the same material (even though the complete "The Song Remains the Same" is a part of the new box).Well, after having listened on several systems and having bought a _bonafide_ SHM-CD elsewhere (The Moody Blues' "To Our Children's Children's Children", despite having the inferior 2005-era remaster, clearly says "SHM" on its outside sticker, as well as around the inner ring of the disc), I STILL don't know if these are SHM-CDs or not. One thing I do know: they sound better than the '94 ones. More headroom, less harshness. Were they remastered? Is it SHM-CD? One thing made it clear it wasn't the same recording: my audiophile friend (on whose system we auditioned both sets, starting with "Presence" then going on to "Houses of the Holy") suggested he buy my '94 box set while listening to "Achilles' Last Stand" from the '94 box. We were barely a minute into the same track on the new box set and he retracted: "Forget that. I'm not buying the old one." The difference isn't enormous, but it is enough to make it a more enjoyable (and less fatiguing) listen. So, in short: I own both "Complete" Led Zeppelin boxes. I A/B'd. There are no tell-tale signs this is a SHM-CD edition (though it did say "Manufactured in Japan" on the outer sticker on the shrinkwrap), but it does sound better than the '94 box set.

Led Zeppelin Retro Box Set [CD],
By
This review is from: Definitive Collection Box Set (Audio CD)
It's retro! The CD cases are exact duplicates of the original LPs. The same jackets, sleeves and material textures! It's like a blast from the past. But they are CD case size so I had to use a magnifer glass to see some of the jacket text but that's OK. Can't see as well as I used to. Oh, they sound great too.

THIS USA VERSION IS NOT SHM CD,
By Ignaciocue (Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Definitive Collection Box Set (Audio CD)
THERE ARE TWO BOXES, ONE IS SHM, AND ONE IS NOT = THE USA VERSION, WHICH HAS ONLY THE PAPER SLEEVES MADE IN JAPAN. THE SHM VERSIONS DO SAY SO NEAR THE CENTER HOLE OF EACH CD. THERE IS A CATCH THOUGH, I UNDERSTAND BOTH PRESSINGS WERE MADE BASED ON 2003 JAPAN REMASTER EDITIONS, SO A SUBTLE REMASTER WAS DONE THAT YEAR AND ANY OF THE BOXES SOUND A BIT BETTER THAN THE 94 REMASTERS.TALKIN ABOUT THE SOUND OF THE SHM BOX, I HAVE MADE A ONE ON ONE COMPARISIONS WITH A FEW SONGS OF THE 94 REMASTERS AND THE SOUND IS a bit cleaner, I AM NOT GOING TO SAY SHM-CD IS SOMETHING OUT OF THIS WORLD, BUT IT DOES SOUND CLEARER, SOMEHOW MORE DETAILED THAN THE 94 REMASTERS. I UNDERSTAND that THE BETTER THE SOUND RIG, THE MORE YOU GET OUT OF THIS NEW FORMAT. I HAVE GOT A BOSE, WHICH SOUND QUITE WELL, BUT WE WILL EXPECT SOME OTHER REVIEWER WITH A REALLY TOP END EQUIPMENT SHARES HIS VIEWS. THE REPLICA PACKAGING IS AMAZING, AND FOR A HEAVY ZEPPELIN FAN HAVING THOSE MINI ALBUMS IN YOUR HANDS EACH TIME YOU BLAST THEM ON, THEY FIRE DEEP EMOTION AND MEMORIES. THEY ARE LIKE LITTLE TREASURES FILLED WITH MAGIC: THE HEAVIEST, MORE INTOXICATING , MAGNETIC, MEANEST ROCK AND BEYOND MUSIC EVER, BECAUSE OF THE HUMONGOUS MUSICAL STATURE OF JIMMY PAGE , THAT GREAT CHARISMATIC DEVIL, THAT MELTED ROCK AND ROLL, COUNTRY, ENGLISH FOLK, ROCKABILLY, ORIENTAL MUSIC, FUNK, JAZZ, BLUES. ALSO THE PRESENCE OF HIS ALSO MEGA GIFTED PARTNERS IN THE GROUP WAS CRUCIAL TO THIS UNIQUE BAND, WHO HAS SOLD NEARLY 90 MILLION ALBUMS WORDWIDE. LETS NOT FORGET THE CHARISMA THEY EMANATE LIVE. NO ONE GETS NEAR IN ROCK.
