Angelina Jolie confirms her status as action-heroine supreme in the sinewy thriller Salt. Evelyn Salt (Jolie) is a respected high-ranking CIA agent… until a defecting Russian operative declares that she's a Russian mole in deep cover, launching her on the most delicious chase sequence since the Bourne movies. When the film's over you'll realize the motivations for much of what happened didn't make much sense, but while the movie's going on the pell-mell pace will brush such concerns from your mind. Director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Dead Calm) has a gift for staging action sequences you can actually follow moment to moment, which is infinitely more engaging than frenzied editing that blurs everything into cattle-prod jolts--the movie's first third is top-notch orchestration. Jolie's star magnetism provides the cool, calm axis around which everything else revolves; the sturdy supporting performances of Liev Schreiber (The Manchurian Candidate) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Inside Man, Dirty Pretty Things) give enough heft to the plot to keep you from questioning anything. Salt is an old-fashioned entertainment, a skillfully made mechanism with enough grace notes to let it breathe and catch you by surprise. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars SALTY - BUT YOU WILL BE LEFT CRAVING FOR JUST A LITTLE MORE, Feb 17 2011

First things first: is Salt the female James Bond? No, but it gives it an honest try.
Is the movie more enjoyable than a James Bond film? Certainly not true for a Sean Connery or a Pierce Brosnan film - but probably more enjoyable than the last Daniel Craig one.

The movie has to be experienced for what it is: an action thriller with spies, double and triple agents, guns, car chases, bridge jumps and you-gotta-be-kidding-me last millisecond saves. The story line is simple yet solid and, if you are familiar with Cold-War espionage plots (and post-Cold-War Russian oligarchy power struggles), not entirely implausible. I did not buy the effect the target of the plot could have or what the plotters aimed at; but this is neither a documentary nor an...Oscar contender. For two hours of escapist entertainment the movie delivers what it promises.

The producers made sure to plant a cliffhanging-hook to ensure the possibility of a franchise. It would take some fancy footwork from the writers' part but I can see it happening.

A good choice for a Sunday night movie at home.

4.0 out of 5 stars An old-fashioned thrill ride..., Oct 30 2010

Salt is a fiercely entertaining spy thriller. It has a breathless momentum that keeps the audience enthralled with relentless action. The story is smart and elaborate, quite heavy on the cold war paranoia. Angelina Jolie is magnetic, falling easily into the role of action heroine. She carries a cool intensity and yet her character manages to remain surprisingly vulnerable. It will leave you asking, "Who is Salt?" right up until the end. The chase sequences are truly pulse pounding. Of course the plot stretches into incredulity more than once but I like to remember that in the end this is an action movie, so suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars wall to wall action, Feb 5 2011

my friend and i thoroughly enjoyed Salt from the get go.it's basically wall to wall action.yes there are no doubt plot holes, and logic gaps, but it's all about the action here.and it's so much fun.plus it's so fast paced, you don't really have time to think about logic or plot, unless you really want to.we just went with it and had a blast.and actually the story is generally well written and has some very clever sequences.if you can just turn your brain off for the allotted run time, you should really enjoy yourself.but if you need you movies to have a high degree of logic and realism, this likely isn't your cup of tea.for me, though,i loved it. 5/5
