The first season of Dennis the Menace, a black-and-white sitcom based on the comic strip by Hank Ketcham that ran on CBS from 1959 to 1960, featured an energetic, curious young boy who was simply a magnet for mischief. Dennis (Jay North) is essentially a good boy who always wants to be right in the middle of whatever's going on in his suburban neighborhood and has an insatiable desire to "help" his friends and neighbors. His loving, but exasperated parents (Gloria Henry and Herbert Anderson) never seem quite able to anticipate what kind of trouble Dennis might get into next, but one can bet that it will probably have something to do with their grouchy neighbor Mr. Wilson (Joseph Kearns). Whether it's planting flowers, pouring a concrete walk, camping out in the backyard, finding a buyer for a neighbor's house, or talking on the neighborhood (telephone) party line, Dennis always seems to inadvertently make a mess of things. In some ways, this sitcom is surprisingly timeless in its portrayal of a young boy and his abundant energy and overwhelming sense of curiosity, but details like the prevalence of cap guns and shooting games in Dennis's play, firecrackers tossed casually into the garbage and incinerator, and the stereotypical portrayal of a "woman's role" are startling reminders of how much has changed since the late 1950s and early 1960s. Bonus features include a 2010 interview with Henry and Jeannie Russell (Margaret) about everything from casting to the weekly shooting schedule and various troubles on the set; a 2007 audio-only radio interview with Henry and Russell; the 1960 Donna Reed Show episode "Donna Decorates," which guest-starred Dennis the Menace; and the original show promo, credits, and commercials. --Tami Horiuchi

I had not seen that series for years. I was not disappointed. The stories are amusing and the actors are great. It is a very charming comedy. I have every intention of buying other seasons.
I found the picture and sound very good; and AMAZON was at its usual standard: just great.

I live in the UK and can remember watching this series when I was no older than Dennis was in the series (around 10 or 11). I have purchased dozens of other television shows from the late 1950s and early 1960s and have really enjoyed watching them all again. However Dennis the Menace is the one television series from this era that really does epitomize my childhood and brings back such wonderful memories for me. I never imagined that I would be watching that lovable rascal Dennis on my television screen again. In conclusion I would just like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those people concerned in making this great tv series available to all fans of Dennis the Menace. Just as a postscript: When Dennis the Menace was shown in Britain it was called "Just Dennis."
At the time there was a funny papers character called Dennis the Menace and so the the tv series Dennis the Menace received the alternate title so as not to confuse it with the funny papers character.

5.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE RELEASE THIS SEASON!, Mar 11 2009
By Robin Ferguson "Titian Tootsie" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dennis the Menace - Season 1 (DVD)
My family loved watching this show. We can't understand why Dennis the Menace, Leave it to Beaver, Jeff's Collie/Lassie & My Three Sons are not relased in full, uncut versions. I enjoy purchasing TV sitcoms for Birthday and Christmas gifts, & would like some of the older, classic shows to choose from. I have been burned by bootleggers so please commercially release these and other old time television shows. The public will buy them. We miss our TV friends and want them to come to DVD so we may watch them whenever we have a few moments off of work and daily presures.

I watched this devotedly when Nickelodeon was re-running the show many years ago. Dennis The Menace is one of those cult classics that belongs in any fan's DVD library. Great escapism of a gentler time period.
