If interior designers Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman could bottle and sell the enthusiasm they bring to their work, they'd probably be renovating their own villa in the south of France. Indeed, the success of their DesignerGuys TV show owes as much to the pair's effervescent personalities as their knack for pairing fabrics with furniture. Similarly, the advice they dispense in their book jumps off the page thanks to their straightforward language and breezy use of vernacular (they describe one client as a "fashionista," for instance). The function of DesignerGuys the book is twofold: Hyndman and Sabados impart general wisdom about decorating and renovating, and they let us watch as they reconfigure rooms for 12 different clients with varying design needs (child-friendly, dog-friendly, confined space, etc.). While both segments provide design insight, the former is considerably more valuable. After all, you can only look at photographs of the same renovation job so many times, no matter how stunning those photos and renos are. But solid, tested-and-true tips about how to plan a major renovation (draw the thing in detail, for example), how best to evaluate one's own style (check your closet for clues), and how to harness colour are relevant to myriad scenarios. In many ways, DesignerGuys reads more like a magazine than a hardcover book, but as Sabados and Hyndman would be quick to point out, their book looks just divine on that granite coffee table in the corner. Or safely and conveniently stored in their much-loved wicker baskets beside the fireplace. --Kim Hughes
