Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Part textbook and part reference work, the fifth edition of a typographic classic begins with a thumbnail history of the development of written language and ends with a glossary; in between are in-depth looks at five classic typefaces, lessons on designing with text type, display type and color, and plenty of project assignments. Though Craig, the former design director for Watson-Guptill, touches on the way that type design can be akin to fine art, most of his focus is on the subtle ways in which typeface affects "mood," and letter shape and spacing influences readability, emphasis and even meaning. Even though technological advances have made innovative text design ever simpler, readers—of books, brochures, cereal boxes and subway advertisements—still tend to prefer their type to be "invisible"—in other words, "to serve as a quiet vehicle for enhancing the meaning of a text." While best suited for a beginning graphic design student, this clear, readable book should also intrigue those interested in how the look of a sentence has an impact on the way we read it. 100 color and 500+ b&w illus. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, but look elsewhere., Oct 4 2002

This review is from: Designing with Type: A Basic Course in Typography (Spiral-bound)
As a graphic design student, I've read numerous books about typography. This book is excellent for a person who's interested in knowing the basics of type and more. However, there is better books out there than this. I recommend the book "A Typographic Workbook" by Kate Clair. Designing with Type really shouldnt be used as a textbook simply because it doesnt cover nearly as much information. If you don't mind spending the extra ... look elsewhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Typography 1 & 2 Courses., Aug 29 2003

This review is from: Designing with Type: A Basic Course in Typography (Spiral-bound)
Judging from my own experience teaching typography, students appreciate the simple, logical approach to the fundamentals of typography found in James Craig's book 'Designing with Type.' This book deserves praise for enabling students to explore essential knowledge on the subject.

More recently, I've been delighted to find there is a free-entry web site associated with the book that provides students-- and professionals--a world-wide forum and many typographic resources. This site is located at Designingwithtype.com for anyone interested.

1.0 out of 5 stars styles, Jan 17 2011
This was a very cutting-edge affair about thirty years ago, and I have it, I bought it a long time ago, but somehow its style has not withstood the test of time. This is true of most things.
