5.0 out of 5 stars DESIRE by Phoebe Conn, July 8 2011
By P. M. Byrne - Published on Amazon.com
Ce commentaire est de: Desire (Paperback)
I was introduced to Ms Conn recently and in the course of the conversation, she mentioned that she had written more than a few historical romance novels.
I was curious to learn more about her writing, so the next day, I searched Amazon's great collection of books, and DESIRE was the first written by her that I found.
It was delivered to my door in three days, and I began reading a marvelous, fast-paced tale of a French beauty named Michelle
who had come to Madrid for the wedding of a Spanish Princess to a French Duke in 1846, an event that actually happened. Michelle and her maid were staying with Michelle's aunt, who lived in Madrid. They had ventured out to purchase souvenirs of their visit and strayed into an unfamiliar part of town. A gypsy in the courtyard of a cafe offered to tell her fortune, but she was more interested in finding the way to her aunt's home.
A handsome, dark-eyed gypsy guitarist was drawn into the conversation, The interaction of these four fills the first third of the book, and includes Michelle's would be suitor, who had been a neighbor for years as they grew up.
The city of Madrid is described so well it comes alive as if it were a movie set, as does the city's most beautiful park on the way to the national museum of art, and the bull ring, another place where some of the action takes place.
The gypsy fortune teller schemes to divest Michelle's aunt of a good part of her fortune.
The gypsy guitarist appears and disappears, seemingly at will, and steals Michelle's heart.
There is an ever-widening story. A duel is fought; a sea voyage begins, pirates, shipwreck, castaways on a deserted island, and an ever more intense love story all swirl together and eventually, order is brought out of chaos.
It's a good thing Ms Conn wrote more of these. One is not enough! 326 words
