Product Description

Review

Breast cancer. Many women can't imagine a more frightening diagnosis. Yet for those who share their stories here, the dreaded disease has strengthened faith and confidence in a loving, compassionate God. Beginning with her own diagnosis, Milligan traces her experience of God through treatment and recovery and shares how other women have discovered His faithfulness in this dark valley.

Without attempting to cover medical details, the book focuses on developing spiritually healthy and hopeful attitudes toward treatment and side effects, grief and loss, and the possibility of death. Milligan also discusses relationships and ways to reaffirm self-image and sexuality after a mastectomy. This excellent, practical guide can help breast-cancer patients face choices, emotions, and tough questions. Recommend it to anyone living with breast cancer--as patient, survivor, family member, friend, or pastor. -- CBA Marketplace, October 1999

Through her own experiences with breast cancer and interviews with women in varying stages of breast cancer, Barbara Milligcan gives a glimpse of what life is like in Desperate Hope: Experiencing God in the Midst of Breast Cancer. Taking the reader along from the feeling that something is amiss through endless doctors' appointments, tough decisions about treatment, and planning for the future, the book provides a spiritual companion and the permission to ask God the hard questions. A unique resource in the book is an appendix offering suggestions on how you can help a friend or loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer. -- Beyond the Cover, October 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resourse book, Aug 4 2000

We are part of the book Desperate Hope. God has chosen to bring cancer patients into our life. This book has been more than inspirational to those we have given it to. Because so many stories are told in this book, it hits personal struggles of a variety of people. This book is not a Fairy Tale story where every one always lives happily ever after. Some included are no longer with us. Barbara has made this a very real, informative and encouraging book. Great reading for all types of struggles, not just cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars great gift idea, April 13 2000

I've never even dealt with breast cancer, but I HAVE dealt with loss of dreams, shock and anger about my "life plan" not working out the way I wanted. This book is wonderful for dealing with all those feelings. Full of anecdotes from the trenches--women who have BEEN THERE and understand. I would recommend this book those suffering from breast cancer and their spouses and friends.

A friend gave me this book when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I cryed through every chapter as it helped me to deal with all the physical and emotional things one deals with. It will encourage you in your faith in God and give you the comfort of hearing how others processed their grief.
