One of the most powerful gut wrenching films I have ever seen in my life. 5 stars does not do it justice. Absolutely incredible performances from the cast especially the amazing Adrien Brody. This film will become a classic right up there with To Sir with Love. It is a story about isolation, lost innocence, the importance of mentors in our society and the power of friendship and forgiveness. After watching this film you might ask yourself: "Am I detached from the things that really matter in my life and the lives of others?"

This movie is filmed with interviews and little cartoons, and it is very well played with natural and conviction. Almost like a true story. And so sad but so true and unforgettable. It made me think very deeply about so many human actions, reminding your influence on others more than you can imagine. This teacher did not want to be implicated in the lives of his students and others around him, but finally, because he is nice and caring, he touches other lives without choosing it and it is very powerful to watch that. It is not a film with big budget or big actors with big ego; that adds to his humane quality. And it is pleasant to see Brody returning to his good acting like in "The Pianist", because all his past recent movies were so bad! You can see that all the actors choose to be part of this movie because the scenario was worth it and because the director put all his love in the film. But you have to be not too sad in the first place to watch it... And you have to know that it is not your typical American movie. It has more the taste of an European movie and that is in part why I appreciated it very much...

Look, Adrien Brody is going to give you a great acting performance no matter what he's in. That's a given. Playing a character like this--lonely and intelligent is right in his wheelhouse. The problem given that is the filmmaking is way too artsy here. The flashback scenes look like bad Kodak film and are only hinting at what happened in Brody's character's past. We really don't get a clear picture at what exactly made him the way he is in the movie.

Given that, though, there are enough poignant scenes and with a cast that includes James Caan, Lucy Liu, Christina Hendricks, Marcia Gay Harden, Blythe Danner and William Peterson, there are plenty of underused heavy hitters in here. Yet the true star of the story is Sami Gayle who plays the very troubled young prostitute. She is a talent that is worth watching over the coming years.

The extras are short on sweet on the DVD. A less than five-minute interview with both the director and Brody plus some Red Carpet interviews at one of the premieres.
