This review is from: Detective Montalbano: Episodes 1-3 (DVD)
italian w/ english subtitles. set in sicily on the seashore this series has nothng to do w/ organized crime. on the contrary stories include: the snack theif -- elderly import-export merchant is murderd and a young tunisian woman disappears at the same time. is she a terrorist? why is her small son 'the snack theif'? what happens to him?this first story reveals montalbano humanity w/ an odd sense of justice. the body is found in an elevator. the intrpid sicilian crime-fighter interviews two woman on the fourth floor who found the body, but didn;t report it because they declared they were 'respectable'. next, montalbano interviews an elderly man who had riden up to his apartment on the fifth floor w/ the body dropping a bottle of wine in the process. terrified his wife will find out he begs the cop to retrieve the bottle. montalbano tells his sargeant to pretend to arrest the two woman making a big display to horrify the neighbours and embarress the woman; then he asks him to by a bottle of wine and slip it to the elderly gentleman. he leaves humming to himsle pleased w/ his orders and having a murder to solve. the first story also reveals montalbno's defiance of authority and his unusual relationship w/ his colleagues not as blatent as the theme in 'zen' series or prime suspect, but politics seem inevitable in the police structure. all this goes together to make a likeable cop and a great series of crime drama. Story 2: the voice of the vilolin - i couldn't guess this one - montolbano's trusty sidekick speeds and ends the 'daring duo' in an accident next to an abandoned palace. in the palace m finds a body of a beautiful nude female. what does the corpse have to do w/ a rare violin found in the villa w/ the lid open? how does an elderly woman who is serenaded weekly by a reired concert violinist and helps montabano w/ an ellicit phone call fit in w/ a dead woman? this one unravels the seperates stories of the citizens of vigata and then ravels them back together around the crime. 3. the shape of water - well written - depicting a political nightmare surounding montalbano and a dead prominant citizen. our crime crusader doesn't believe the corener's verdict of heart attack nor the circumstantial evidence againt the daugher-in-law of the deceased. by the way, the little boy from story one reappears in the cop's personal life. that's partly why this series is so appealing -- the personal, political and crime drama intertwine to make this cop likeable and competent at his job and very, very sicilian. i'm definitely buying the next series, read 5 stars if you don't mind foreign lauguage w/ english subtitles. that's my only complaint. 3 dvd set. approx. 330 min.coloue. stereo. region 1 ntsc. italian w/ optional english subtitles. Extras: interview w/ actorcesare bocci aand photo galleries.

One of the problems I find with books that are made into movies is that the directors and writers seldom remember the original plot, let alone the place and pace of the characters, which is happily not the case with this DVD series. The filming, plotlines and casting in these first three episodes are spot on and although it takes a little time to get used to the quick subtitles this, my friends, is very good entertainment and well worth the price. Luca Zingaretti in the lead role of Inspector (Detective) Montalbano is one of the best detectives you'll find on the big (or little) screen today and Zingaretti and the great cast of actors and Sicilian locations make it happen with convincing style. Zingaretti is Montalbano to the proverbial T and producer Carlo Degli Esposti and director Alberto Sironi have captured the heart, sweat and soul of Andrea Camilleri's three books; The Snack Thief, The Voice of the Violin and The Shape of Water that you'll find on these initial disks. Although one reviewer complained about the fast pace of the subtitles, I found it to be convincing enough since it falls in line with most Italian speakers I know and any conversations I tried in Italy. The subtitle pace annoyed me initially too until I realized it matched the actual speech patterns. Then I chuckled. Besides, with DVDs what we miss, we can always go back and pick up with the rewind. I've spent the last year turning some friends on to Camilleri's works because they're just well written and enjoyable so now I'll champion this DVD series for the same reasons. These are anything but the same old plots or whudunnit mysteries.Buy the books and buy the DVD collection. This is Italian (Sicilian) gold and friends, it shines! Will other reviewers agree with me? Probably not because like most of us, what we read we envision in our mind's eye and form our own interpretations. We all occasionally wear rose colored glasses which might explain love, folks who believe pug dogs are cute, and probably our reviews here. 28 of 29 people found the following review helpful

At first the sub-titles were a little disconcerting but I got used to it quickly. The settings and the plot are excellent and the actors are a joy to watch. I had only previously read "The Shape of Water" (the third DVD in this first series) and I found the DVD followed the plot of the book with the added joy of watching a setting I have never visited. The detective novel "The Shape of Water" seemed very "wordy" to me while the DVD sub titles went to the heart of the matter. Again watching the supporting actors (like the "wronged" wife in DVD #2) was also real pleasure. The sub-plot involving Livia ties the separate plots together and gives a real humanity to the Detective that other detective plots often lack. Anyway, this is not Ho-Hum viewing. If you are up for an adventure, go for this Detective.

Having read all of the translated versions of the Montalbano series, and knowing that there were movies of the stories shown on RAI, it was great to finally have the DVDs available in western format. After viewing the first three stories, it was well worth the wait--the cast is perfect and the scripts do complete justice to Mr. Camilleri's writing. Now we're looking forward to seeing the full set of the DVDs. Highly recommend them to Inspector Montalbano's many fans.
