Product Description

The Showtime Original Series DEXTER(tm) is back with an all-new season, and this time America's favorite serial killer has gone from freewheeling bachelor to responsible husband and doting dad. Maintaining an average-guy facade while satisfying his need to kill has never been easy. But now, with wife and kids in tow, Dexter's got more to lose then ever, as he gets drawn into a deadly game with a killer every bit as dangerous -- and conflicted -- as he is.

Bonus Features:
* Interview: Dexter : Entrevue avec Michael C. Hall et John Lithgow

Amazon.ca

Unfolding with tragic inevitability, Dexter's fourth season is a taut game of cat and mouse between Dexter (Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall) and Arthur Mitchell, "a very special kind of monster," unnervingly portrayed by John Lithgow in his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning performance. Whoever guest stars in seasons to come has a very hard act to follow. (Never mind all the blood, Mitchell's greeting, "Hello, Dexter Morgan," from the episode of the same name, will disturb your sleep.) But let's not forget Hall's consistently cutting-edge work. The Dexter saga has a rich back-story and mythology, but for those new to the series and lured to this season by Lithgow's justly celebrated performance, season 4 is a good place to start, because it represents something of a new beginning for Dexter himself. Married at the end of season 3, he is now dreaming of "having it all" as a husband and father, trying to juggle the demands of his job as a Miami Metro Police Department blood-spatter analyst, his new family, and his other calling as a serial killer. But he is more conflicted than ever. His new baby keeps him up nights, and the normally precise and methodical Dexter finds himself exhausted to the point of making mistakes in court. "Who knew life could get so unsimple?" he asks early on. Dexter and Mitchell are not the only characters harboring secrets. Some we can mention (Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta and Detective Angel Batista are in a relationship), but others we dare not even hint at (the episode "Hungry Man" has a doozy of a cliffhanger revelation). As the season unfolds, an incognito Dexter insinuates himself into Arthur's life and discovers disturbing parallels in their lives. Meanwhile, now-retired serial killer hunter Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), who nearly uncovered Dexter's identity back in season 2, returns to ask for his help in catching the Trinity Killer. His reappearance upends the life of Dexter's sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), a homicide detective and Lundy's former lover. Debra has also been digging into the past of her late policeman father Harry (James Remar) and learns more about her twisted family tree. Disappointingly, interviews with Hall, Lithgow, and other cast members can be accessed only on a PC, but the DVD does contain episodes of Californication, Lock 'N Load, and The Tudors. --Donald Liebenson --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

Season 4 introduces John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer, another serial killer with a seriously messed up past. Lithgow provides some excellent acting in this series, quite the departure from his comedic role in 3rd Rock. The dynamic between Dexter's family life and his dark secrets continues and I have to say that ever since the events of Season 2, the relationship between Rita and Dexter has been strained and gets tedious at times. Quinn does well in the role of antagonist but he's no Doakes. In my opinion, this is the most disturbing season of Dexter thus far but it definitely grabs hold of you. Recommended for Dexter fans but not the faint of heart.

I love this series and my favourite seasons to date have been 1 and 3.

(Warning: mild spoilers)

For me, the biggest problem with this season was the lack of a good villain. John Lithgow is a great actor, but his character just didn't do it for me. I suppose many viewers found it "ironic" that the supposed perfect conservative Christian American husband-and-family-man turns out to have a dark secret. Whereas to me his entire character seemed like a total stereotype and this is exactly the type of person who would be most likely to repress his feelings and have a violent or sordid side. Also, I found his psychological reasons for killing to be flawed and inconsistent. I just disliked the whole Trinity Killer storyline, particularly during the latter half of the season, and found the series ending to be overly manipulative.

On the other hand, Dexter and the rest of the supporting cast is fantastic as always. I am addicted to this show and hope next season has a better villain.

I watched the first three seasons on NetFlix. I was hooked. Found season four and five on Amazon and ordered them. Just waiting for Amazon to get season six and will buy that. The Dvd's arrived exactly when they said they would. Excellent service.

**NOTE: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**

Bathtub murders of young women. Mothers of two jumping to their deaths. Bludgeonings of 40-something fathers. Such is the M.I. of the Trinity Killer, Dexter's twisted adversary this fourth season of the hit Showtime series.

The good news is that "Dexter" rises to the challenge of staying fresh this season and delivers with its best story arc since Season One. The second and third seasons were good but John Lithgow and the Trinity storyline bring back a creepiness to the show that was missing with Jimmy Smits. Not since the Ice Truck Killer storyline has "Dexter" managed to make this viewer so uneasy. The kills this season are very disturbing. An attack in a quiet and deserted office building is particularly unnerving.

While Dexter hunts Trinity, the department is trying to solve the Vacation Murders, as Miami tourists are being robbed and killed.

It was a delight to see Adrienne Barbeau ("Maude") in the season-premiere as one of Harry's informant girlfriends.

Deb finds herself in a love triangle when FBI Agent Lundy returns unexpectedly, but it isn't long before both he and Anton are out of her life for good. Jennifer Carpenter really delivers when Deb has her subsequent breakdown and also at the end of the season in some crucial scenes involving a suspect.

Quinn starts up a sexual relationship with a clingy female reporter, whose neediness makes him a little uncomfortable and which tests his loyalities to the force.

Angel gets promoted this season but he and Laguerta endanger their jobs by engaging in an inter-office romance.

Masuka again provides the comic relief, and his big moment comes during Thanksgiving at Dexter's.

This is an amazing show, seasons 1 through 4 are a TV masterpiece! I recommend to watch it when it comes out on DVD or Blue-ray because you can't wait for the next episode. It's so addictive you'd want to watch the whole season in one go.
