Generally, when the weddings and babies start coming to a series it's a leading indicator that ideas have run dry. Fortunately, up to the end of Season 4, 'Dexter' had not fallen into this trap. Unfortunately, Season 5 should have listed the baby as co-starring, and the series has definitely lost its edge. The first episode is a complete drag and the next few are all over the place - sort of a soap-opera splatter fest rather than the tight and tense storylines of previous years. Things do pick up later though, and as is usual with Dexter, occasional suspension of disbelief is necessary. It would also be helpful if the folks at Showtime could take the trouble after all these years to put together a DVD a little more suited to watch at home, in succession. You cannot go straight to the menu after watching the FBI/Interpol warning; you have to also watch through a Showtime promo on all four discs because you can't bring up the menu or fast-forward through the promo. The chapter breaks do not allow you to skip to the program after the menu - you have to fast-forward through the titles to the beginning of the episode. Friendlier-organized DVDs have chapter breaks which coincide with the main menu, then skip past the standard intro to the start of the show. And there are NO SUBTITLES, just closed captioning, or so we are told anyway. I have several up to date players and TVs that supposedly allow CC, but have never had them show up once, possibly (?) because you must use analog connections to receive them - hardly much use on today's HDMI/HiDef systems. Closed captioning as seen on TV is generally quite unsatisfactory anyway - they seem to use voice recognition software which is hit-and-miss at best. Showtime, spend a few bucks and include subtitles. Pretty well everyone else does, and it gets a little tedious backing up several times to try to figure out what they're whispering.

The Weakest Season Yet,

This review is from: Dexter: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)
After the previous season ends with Rita dead in a virtual bloodbath, Season Five of "Dexter" opens with our favorite serial killer struggling with guilt and trying to avoid suspicion for his wife's death (particularly from Quinn). The way Astor and Cody and their grandparents react to Rita's death is not very believable. No one seems to show an appropriate degree of grief. It's as though Dexter's lack of emotion has rubbed off on everyone else.Deb and Quinn develop serious feelings for each other but that gets complicated when Deb discovers Quinn's enlisted a crooked cop to spy on Dex. Battista and Laguerta struggle to balance work and home lives and their marriage becomes strained. Masuka never fails to disappoint as the comic relief (watch for the scene as he pantomimes the fundamentals of auto-erotic asphyxiation). It takes a surprisingly long time for the writers to establish the season's main story arc. Up to that point, the "B" story is more interesting with bizarre ritual murders involving decapitations and eye-gougings. There is more genuine suspense when the gang ambush a seedy apartment complex and stake out a hopping nightclub. Nearly mid-season, Dexter gets an unwelcome accomplice in the form of rape victim Lumen Pierce (Julia Stiles), who has witnessed him offing one of the men who raped and tortured her. It eventually becomes apparent to Dex that Lumen is carrying her own "Dark Passenger" and worms her way into his killing ritual. It's great to finally see Dexter be allowed to show his true colours to another with the Julia Stiles character; something he never experienced with Rita. Dexter ends up playing cat-and-mouse with a dangerous adversary (again) but even though there's a twist this time because of his female conspirator, it's been done before and much better in previous years. "Dexter" is still a great show; the acting is perfect, but some of the storylines are becoming repetitive. I'd say Season 4 was the series' peak. The Trinity Killer storyline was so well-executed the tension and suspense was almost unbearable at times. I doubt they can top it. Unless they can re-invent the show and go in a somewhat different direction like "Weeds", the producers should probably pack it in after next season. I wasn't as enthralled with this season as I was the others because the excitement and suspense just wasn't there and the writing and plot wasn't as cohesive. Four stars and about on par with Season 3.

Best season of the series in my opinion. Rented the others but was really glad I bought this one. Only disappointment is that there were no 'extra's' like behind the scenes or bloopers etc, I think it would have made it more personable but the series is not over, maybe the producers might do a special and add it to the series finale.
