Book Description

May 15 2012
Deckard Cain made his way across the floor, following the footprints to an alcove in the far wall. Rotted boards clung to supports, the last remains of an ancient library. This had been a ritual chamber, many centuries before, used to summon things from beyond the human world. A portal to the Burning Hells themselves, perhaps. The shelves were empty now. He saw a speck of yellow underneath a splinter of wood and bent to pick up a corner of parchment paper, curled and speckled with mildew.

Something moved in the shadows to his right.

He whirled, holding the light up. For a moment it appeared as if the shadows themselves were alive, bunching and swirling like ink in water. At the same time, a voice like the distant moan of wind drifted through the empty room and raised the hairs on the back of his neck.

Deckaaaaarrdddd Caiiinnnn . . .”

Cain felt a strange doubling, a memory of a night many years before, when he was just a boy. A whispered voice calling to him, just like this. He backed away, fumbling in his rucksack with one hand, holding the lighted staff with the other against the darkness. Already he was doubting himself: had it just been the wind moving through the broken remains of the building above him, a trick his mind had played after so long in the sun?

The voice came again, a sound like bones scraping together in the grave.

“Your ghosts are many, old man, and they are active.”

A grating of metal over rock seemed to come from everywhere at once. Once again a pool of black smoke thickened and then dissipated, only to reassemble somewhere else: a shape carrying a sword, the form of a man, but with eyes that glowed red with the fires of hell.

Cain knew what this was, yanked from the depths of his own mind and used against him: the image of the Dark Wanderer himself, conjured up to weaken his resolve. The smoke-shape swirled and shifted, reforming into two indistinct human shapes, one taller and clearly female, one small and delicate. Shock raced through Cain’s limbs as an older, familiar memory fought to surface. He closed his eyes against the darkness as the yawning pit of despair opened within him, threatening to pull him in. You must not listen.

***

Deckard Cain is the last of the Horadrim, the sole surviving member of a mysterious and legendary order. Assembled by the archangel Tyrael, the Horadrim were charged with the sacred duty of seeking out and vanquishing the three Prime Evils: Diablo (the Lord of Terror), Mephisto (the Lord of Hatred), and Baal (the Lord of Destruction). But that was many years ago. As the decades passed, the Horadrim’s strength diminished, and they fell into obscurity. Now all of their collected history, tactics, and wisdom lie within the aged hands of one man. A man who is growing concerned.

Dark whisperings have begun to fill the air, tales of ancient evil stirring, rumblings of a demonic invasion set to tear the land apart.

Amid the mounting dread, Deckard Cain uncovers startling new information that could bring about the salvation—or ruin—of the mortal world: other remnants of the Horadrim still exist. He must unravel where they have been and why they are hiding from one of their own.

As Cain searches for the lost members of his order, he is thrust into an alliance with an unlikely ally: Leah, an eight-year-old girl feared by many to carry a diabolical curse. What is her secret? How is it tied to the prophesied End of Days? And if there are other living Horadrim, will they be able to stand against oblivion? These are the questions Deckard Cain must answer . . .

. . . before it is too late.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Diablo novel! June 2 2012

Greetings and salutations! :D

For fans of the Diablo series, or for those that fancy Diablo universe lore...
I highly recommend Diablo 3: The Order!

Mr. Nate Kenyon did a phenomenal job in telling yet another tale of Sanctuary. The transitions are well written, and the story flows rather magnificently.
As other people have stated in their reviews, the author was quite descriptive and remained true to the overall feeling of the dark, gritty atmosphere of the Diablo series.

The Order essentially fills in some story line and plot from the Diablo series; taking place after the destruction of the Worldstone. Although the story involves many characters, you won't find an incredible depth to each and every one... but still manages to keep seemingly every character interesting. Also, "The Order" introduces and reveals information about Leah in her younger years... but where "The Order" truly shines is in its telling of Cain, his history and much of his plight, both past and present.... much of which was incredibly surprising to me; information that is not revealed or gleaned in the Diablo game series.

Forgive me for my nergasm, but the most exciting part of the book.. albeit brief, is the mentioning of certain characters from the other novels, such as Legacy of Blood!
I find myself enjoying the Diablo universe far more when novels and characters from the same universe crossover.
I don't want to ruin the surprise so I'll leave it at that, but fans won't be disappointed as they venture into the later chapters of the story.

I found that I greatly enjoyed this captivating story. A must read for Diablo fans, especially for those seeking to gain more insight in the life of Cain. My respect and admiration for the character of Deckard Cain grew tenfold after reading "The Order". Here I thought Leah suffered quite a bit... and yet, arguably, Cain seems to better fit the title of "Tragic Hero".

Here's to hoping the characters from the other novels make an appearance in future installments and expansions of Diablo 3! (Actually involvement in the storyline.. not a cameo)

(Tangent time!) Its a tad disappointing... that despite everything Cain has been through, the dangers he has faced... enemies, demons, etc... I still find myself just.. disappointed in the route that the writers decided to take in Diablo 3 involving Deckard Cain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book and a nice look into the world of Sanctuary before the events of D3 May 30 2012
By Pravius - Published on Amazon.com

I have always been a fan of Blizzard games and books. I have read a few World of Warcraft books but none seem to have grabbed me as much as "The Order". The book starts off I believe around 5 years before the events of Diablo 3. It gives you a detailed story about how Deckard ended up with Leah and how they became so close to each other, not only that but it also shapes the story leading into the events of D3.

The author is very descriptive of environments, feelings, etc. It really opens up your imagination to what the world of Santuary may look (and feel) like. It tells a story and follows a plot and it is a very good one at that. I do not want to say too much, but if you are in love with Diablo and the lore pick this up and give it a read.

Very good book imo!

This book does great job covering the wide gap from Diablo 2 to 3. If you were like me and just played the 3rd game and not the first two it really help you get up to seep on what has happen and how it has effect the world the game takes place in. Any fan of Diablo love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, love the lore! March 12 2013
By Younger C. Markman - Published on Amazon.com

The lore of Diablo is my second favorite video game universes out there, and this prequel to Diablo 3 is an excellent addition to my collection of books from that lore universe. I have all of the Diablo books to this date, and love every one of them. From the Sin War trilogy to all the stories, the books are great. A good story for those who want to know what happened several years before Diablo 3.
