This time the diary is written by Worm's friend Spider and filled with similar verbal high jinks, deadpan humor and visual jokes that offer readers a whimsical glimpse of the world from a small creature's point of view. Endpapers feature photos of Spider's family as well as his favorite book (Charlotte's Web), his discovery of a "neat sculpture!" Children will relate to the book's droll humor, as when Spider goes to the park with his sister ("We tried the seesaw. It didn't work") or when he takes his molted skin for show-and-tell. A slight story line about the tension between Spider's friendship with Fly and his Grampa's prejudice against all six-legged bugs threads together the amusing vignettes. (When Grampa says, "Without spiders, insects could take over the world," Bliss features a menacing alien bug as President of the United States.) This endearing book delivers a gentle message that comes through when Spider muses, "I wish that people wouldn't judge all spiders based on the few spiders that bite. PreSchool-Grade 3–Children who enjoyed Diary of a Worm (HarperCollins, 2003) will be enchanted by this artistic team's latest collaboration. This time, Spider is the star. Through his humorous diary entries, readers learn about typical events in the life of a young spider. When Spider's mom tells him he's getting too big for his skin, he molts. Fly's feelings are hurt by a thoughtless comment from Daddy Longlegs, and Spider tries to help. He is concerned that he will have to eat leaves and rotten tomatoes when he has a sleepover with Worm. Spider's school doesn't have fire drills; it has vacuum drills (…vacuums eat spiderwebs and are very, very dangerous). Grampa tells him that spider-fly relations have improved over the years and shares the secret of long life–don't fall asleep in shoes. Now from the author of THE DIARY OF A WORM comes an enchanting book about a spider's diary. What fun reading the entires and learning more about spiders.Charming dialogue, cute characters ... all in all a fantastic book for young kids. A great story showing the inter-workings of friendship, too.

I was always afraid of spiders. However, as I was reading this book for my youngest daughter (4 years old) she became fascinated with them. She wants to have a few spiders at home and treat them like pets!!! That is the surprising effect of authors' "humanizing" the spiders for the readers.My 7 years old daughter reads the book again and again for her younger sister and following the advice from Diary of a Spider they always check if there is no spider in their shoes before putting them on (they don't want to step on a spider and do any harm) In general I find the book well written and beautifully illustrated. It is also educational (spiders are not insects - insects have six legs; spiders shed their skins) and teaches children such good values as friendship, compassion, love, etc. One of the most important statements I found by the end of the book: "... if we took the time to get to know each other we would get along just fine". I highly recommend this book to all loving and responsible mothers. I only wish the book to be less expensive. A paperback edition might be a good idea for mothers with tight budget. My 10-years-old has recently become fascinated with another series diaries. They are diaries of a cat, titled "Why Some Cats are Rascals". There are three books in the series. Each new book devided into two or three parts, each one contating a different story. Also five stars.

A Really Cute Book,

This is a sweet book. I think it's the illustrations that make it stand out. There are even several humorous scenes on the inside covers of the book.It educates about spiders but does it in a really funny way, i.e., "Without spiders, insects could take over the world" - this caption with the illustration of an insect sitting behind a desk as the President of United States. This book is a silly/fun book and a really good read. It deals well with peoples' fear of spiders--another really great children's book about dealing with fears is the totally hilarious Scaredy Squirrel series.
