After an act of piracy onboard the ship of the Spanish nobleman Belmonte, Lostados, son of the Commandant of Oran, Constanze, who is betrothed to Belmonte, and her maid Blondchen, along with Belmonte's manservant Pedrillo, who is engaged to Blondchen, fell into the hands of pirates. Pedrillo has succeeded in sending word of their whereabouts to Belmonte.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful production Nov. 22 2008
By Roger D. Nelson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I wanted to give a really nice present to my wife, and took advantage of a casual remark she made about Entfuhring -- that it is such a nice opera, but seldom seen in the US. So I went to Amazon, and voila - a lovely present.
She loved it, and so did I. All the voices are perfect, and all the acting, scenes, the whole performance -- like Mozart would have wanted.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 'Abduction' available Dec 25 2000
By Luiz Abreu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:VHS Tape
I found this a very fine production of Mozart's masterwork "The Abduction from the seraglio". What can we say about the music but that it is Mozart at his best, his second master opera (of the seven he wrote in the last decade of his life) and therefore some of the most beautiful music ever composed. The production is lively and colorful, with exquisite sets and costumes: one exception: why is Pasha Selim dressed in western-style clothes when he first appears? Kurt Moll's performance is excellent as usual and I also liked Lillian Watson as a very funny Blondie. The opera is sung in the original German, with English subtitles.

I saw this on a public TV brodcast in my home country of Guatemala when I was 16 or 17 years old, and I just fell in love with it. After a lot of searching around I was able to find this beatifull preformance here, after16 years I get to experience it again.

Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Osmin for the ages Jan. 1 2006
By David - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This is an excellent production of Die Entfuhrung. In this performance it is Kurt Moll who steals the show as Osmin. With his stunning bass voice and his inspired and comic stage presence. A truly great performance by him. The other singers are all top notch. And Solti's conducting is very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only because I am a Seraglio virgin ... Aug. 8 2014
By Brent Peterson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
That is, only because it's the last of the major Mozart operas that I have not ever heard, either live or on records ... I was planning on making it a world-class evening.

And having read the reviews, I felt this was the obvious choice;

But I was surprised by the primitive sound. And I do have other DVDs from Covent Garden, from the same era, and they do not sound like this. So I wish the five-star reviews had mentioned the substandard sound. After the overture and first scene, I turned it off and decided to look for a different Seraglio as a first timer. I can always come back to this one later.
