Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This well-documented expose of America's "factory farms" should prompt even die-hard meat-and-potatoes lovers to reevaluate their diets. Asserting that "we are ingesting nightmares for breakfast, lunch and dinner," Robbins, who is medical director of the California Institute for Health and Healing, details how livestock is raised under increasingly industrialized conditions by "agribusiness oligopolies." Grazing and foraging have given way to debeaking, tail-docking, dehorning and castration, and treatment with pesticides, hormones, growth and appetite stimulants, tranquilizers and antibioticswhich, in turn, are assimilated by humans. The author correlates our "protein obsessed" society with a higher incidence of arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, cancer and other degenerative diseases, as well as freakish occurrences like premature puberty from estrogen contamination. As Robbins debunks nutritional myths perpetuated by the powerful meat and dairy industries (indicting as well his family's Baskin-Robbins ice-cream empire), this is sure to prove controversial. From the outset of reading this volume I was enthralled. The book is a pleasure to read, as engrossing as the most exciting novel. Yet this is no novelit deals directly with the most important personal issues and decisions of our lives. When I finished reading Diet for a New America, I knew that in my hands lay one of the most profound studies ever written of how our eating habits affect our lives, and indeed all of life on our planet . . . If you read only one book this year, let it be this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must read, Mar 29 2005
This review is from: Diet for a New America: How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health, Happiness and the Future Of Life on Earth Second Edition (Paperback)
Old, but not really outdated, this book will make you think about what you put in your mouth.

Although it may not convince you to go vegan, it will inform you of the personal and environmental consequences of choosing to consume heedlessly. It will encourage mindful eating. It might also gross you out a bit.

I think some of the language is a bit inflammatory for my tastes, but I happen to agree with much of it, so I was almost able to overlook it. Read it for yourself and judge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book, July 27 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Diet for a New America: How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health, Happiness and the Future Of Life on Earth Second Edition (Paperback)
I first bought this book simply because I read an article by John Robbins and found his writing very inviting. I used to think that it would take a lot to convince me to stop eating animal products - I used to think nothing would do it. But I read this book and was presented with so many reasons for becoming vegan that I've switched to a vegan diet with relative ease. Robbins' book is wonderful in that it's really a celebration of life. He really shows you the facts about meat and dairy industries that are often kept from the consciousness of most Americans. I think this book is an extremely important read for anyone that considers themself a compassionate, accepting person. It's also crucial for those that care about their health. Because the meat industries have such clout, you need to read this book or books like it to really know the truth. My life is extremely blessed since I've read Diet for A New America and incorporated it into my Self. I recommend it to anyone that doesn't think "ignorance is bliss" and wishes to take the path of acceptance and to road to true happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greed in America food industry, Mar 31 2004
By
This review is from: Diet For A New America (Paperback)
Eventhough I'm only half-way through the book, it has already impacted my life in so many ways. For startes, I have vowed to stop eating all red meat. The only thing I am still consuming is fish . . . not a lot. Hopefully with time, I can abstain from that too. But what really tick me is the greed in the beef/poultry industries! I can tell you more, but I think it is more effective if you read this book. The truth in this book will waken the humanity in you, at the very least.
