Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

He didn't go so far as to call it Silk Degrees II, but Dig is as close as Boz Scaggs is likely to come to recording the sequel to his most commercially successful and, for many, best-loved record (unless you count 1977's underrated follow-up, Down Two Then Left). Reunited after all these years with Silk Degrees collaborator David Paich, Scaggs makes a successful return to the blue-eyed soul of his late-1970s works on tracks such as "Desire" and "Thanks to You", the latter featuring tastefully muted trumpet work from Roy Hargrove. Elsewhere, a tuneful "Call That Love" bounces along over a "Lowrider"-style groove, while "Get on the Natch" and "You're Not" are apparent attempts by Scaggs and Danny Kortchmar (who coproduced with Paich) to fuse blues and hip-hop. There's even something for fans of Paich's old band, Toto, whose pristine pop stylings, circa "Africa" are echoed on "Vanishing Point", arguably one of this album's best cuts. True, nothing here may be quite as poppy as "Georgia" or as pretty as "Harbor Lights", but Scaggs deserves credit for trying to evoke the spirit of Silk Degrees without merely pandering to his past. -- Bill Forman

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and current, Nov 3 2006
By
This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
I own all of the Boz Scaggs albums he ever recorded, except for some obscure albums prior to his hit release Silk Degrees in the mid '70's. Seeing him live this summer in Las Vegas only reminded me of how much I admire his timeless style, smooth and almost perfect sycronicity with his band, backups and his beautiful guitar work. "Miss Riddle" and "Desire" on this album are my two favourites, they represent his smooth, articulate musical and writing style, that is his quality standard that has spanned the years since his beautiful songs "Slow Dancer" and "Look What You've Done To Me" hit the charts in the '70's. This is a terrific album, with a wonderful mix of his contemporary music stylings that was ahead of its time in those early 70's. This musician is truly one of the best of his generation, and his ability to remain current after almost 40 years is awesome. This album is fantastic. If you are a Boz Scaggs fan, and even if not, you will enjoy an ingenious mix of blues/jazz/pop/rock. Scaggs fills the bill quite nicely with "Dig."

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Getting Better, Mar 10 2004

This review is from: Dig (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Boz Scaggs since the late 1960's and he continues to amaze me with his ability to be relevant. Most of his music is timeless (as music should be) and even if some of his albums are somewhat strained, his distinctive voice and style will always come through. I don't think of Dig as "Silk Degrees 2" but rather as one of the overall best albums I have ever listened to; an album that, if it were vinyl, you would play from from the start groove on side one through the time when it started clicking on side two if your automatic turntable failed to be automatic. His distincive voice (and musical talent) combine to make his style timeless, unlike some solo artists whose music tends to sound the same and becomes tiresome. If you love artists who can create music rather than sample the music of others with the gift of music, you should appreciate Boz Scaggs. I'm an old guy who grew up listening to AM radio at night when Wolfman Jack and Dick Biondi at WLS in Chicago were "spinning the tunes for the kids". I will always appreciate someone with musical talent, whether it's a band or an individual, rather than what a record company thinks will make money for their bottom line.
