Book Description

Feb 23 1988 0471629472 978-0471629474
Offers the most complete, up-to-date coverage available on the principles of digital communications. Focuses on basic issues, relating theory to practice wherever possible. Numerous examples, worked out in detail, have been included to help the reader develop an intuitive grasp of the theory. Topics covered include the sampling process, digital modulation techniques, error-control coding, robust quantization for pulse-code modulation, coding speech at low bit radio, information theoretic concepts, coding and computer communication. Because the book covers a broad range of topics in digital communications, it should satisfy a variety of backgrounds and interests, and offers a great deal of flexibility for teaching the course. The author has included suggested course outlines for courses at the undergraduate or graduate levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars quick and to the point Jun 22 2003
Format:Paperback
This book does an excellent job of being very precise, and still getting all the major points across. I read through the 4 chapters needed in my course in about 15 hours, and I am a slow reader.

Chapter 3 is more theoretical than other chapters, but it is very approachable. You won't become a math expert after reading it, but it gives you a solid understanding of why everything in later chapters work.

This book has a reasonable number of worked-out examples, but I would have like to see more examples in certain areas.

I probably have about 10 book in the field of digital communications, but I have to tell you that Haykin knows how to address the more complicated issues in a direct, simple and concise way. Very good book for any engineer in the need of theory and math!!
