I ordered this book when I got my first DSLR. I learned a few basic techniques from reading it but I still found it difficult to understand the terminology. Their explanations of things were still a little overwhelming for a beginner.

This book is wrongly titled, as the writer has mostly used Nikon & Sony Camera & mostly explains about these cameras. If you own any other brand of Digital SLR Camera, then this book has very limited use. So I do not recommend for any one who has other brand of Digital SLR.

HASH(0xa847f930) out of 5 stars Real knowledge for photographers of all levels. Feb. 11 2011
By Doctor Dan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Don't let the title put you off. The word "Dummies" might cause some folks to look elsewhere without even considering the content. I got started taking photos with a large Graflex press camera that used film plates (like you see the Press guys using in the old black and white movies) and have done my share of photography over the years.

With the advent of digital cameras, and especially the more recent high end DSLR models, there's whole new realm of information to master. Whether you're a seasoned photographer graduating from film (remember film?) to a new digital SLR monster, or someone having their first experience with a point and shoot digital camera, this book will have a wealth of knowledge to help you enjoy your visual passion.

HASH(0xa8558ee8) out of 5 stars Perfect for beginers Jan. 12 2013

This item is given 5 stars due to the way the Author wrote the book and the contents. It is written in such a way as to not be overly clever or technical (suppose thats the point of the for dummies series). This book is very large and utterly filled with just about everything a begginer such as myself wants to know about the magical world of DSLR photography. Having spent many hours reading many sites, forums and what not about DSLR's photography I wasnt sure weather to spend the $'s buyig such a book as there is alot of information availble online for free. Im glad to say pay the $s was a good move as there is just SO much information inside this book it really is a 9 in 1 style book that you can freely just go directly to the areas of interest for you, there is no need to start at the beggining and work all the way through. If your a begginer, if your interested in getting in to the field of DSLR photography or even a seasoned DSLR nutcase this book has something for everyone and I highly advise this book. It is a few years old now but still all the information is relevent enough and detailed enough for any person too fill in the blanks that the 3 odd years since publishing has produced.

HASH(0xa857984c) out of 5 stars very informative; slightly dated May 18 2012
By BJTok - Published on Amazon.com

I was sitting on the fence about whether I should buy a dSLR and, if so, which one would be the right one for me. I invested in this book to help me find the answers and it did. I learned what made a dSLR different from the more compact point and shoots as well as other really cool stuff that I never had a notion of before (my favorite is HDR). The book gave me photography pointers and explained in depth about exposure values; shutter speeds vs. apertures vs. ISO. By no means am I an expert in these things but I DO understand what they are and how manipulating them affects the photo. I was very happy with the purchase and have even loaned it out to a relative who recently bought a dSLR but didn't understand many of its features.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that it was published a couple of years ago and, consequently, the comparison tables in the back do not cover some of the popular dSLR cameras on the market today. The author knew this would happen and has done his best to compensate for it. After I had made the decision to purchase a dSLR and was trying to choose which one, I contacted the author by e-mail and he gave me some very good pointers and advice.
I would recommend this book to any novice/dummie.
