This book must be pretty bad if they need to use shill reviews to sell it Aug. 6 2012

Format: Paperback
Don't you hate it when you're reading reviews for a book like "Digital Photography Composition For Dummies" and you notice pretty quickly that many of them read like marketing BS? And then you look a little more closely at the reviews and each covers a specific selling point...and gives a five-star rating...and are written by reviewers who only use their first name...and who have mostly only managed to review one book - this one.

Hmmm. What's going on here?

I thought the book was OK, but it's no five-star effort. It lacks the depth and production quality of a best-of-class book - and while author Tom Clark does a good job of explaining technique, his text is not enhanced in any way by the grating "For Dummies" graphic design practices.

There are several other excellent books on composition out there ("The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos" is my long-time favorite). I urge you to consider them as well before you purchase this "five-star

A Good Book for Non-Dummies Too Nov. 12 2011

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I'm generally not an admirer of the "Dummies" books, but this one is a real find. It focuses on the issues of composing a photograph (centering, the rule of thirds, handling horizons and faces, etc.)and is not really limited to digital photography. It uses good examples and illustrations, is intelligently written, and it is a real value for the price. While I disagree at times with the book's suggestions about which is the best of several versions of a photograph shown, I have found it very helpful. It is one of the better photography books on my shelves.
Essential guide for photography newbies and advanced July 21 2013

As an "advanced amateur," I'm always looking for ways to increase my skills and my "artistic eye." I've taken several landscape and portrait photos, and, while technically correct (most of the time), they always seemed to lack that certain "je nes sais quoi" that separates great photos from so-so snapshots.

Enter Digital Photography Composition for Dummies. From beginning to end, I learned new ways of composing my photos to be more appealing. Yes, some of the suggestions are extremely basic (find something to "frame" the subject, use leading lines, etc.), but that is to be expected for a "Dummies" book, which, by definitions presupposes you know nothing about the subject.

The author takes you on a guided tour of composition that helps you train your photographic eye to find the best composition. The suggestions are extremely helpful and well-organized.

You'll love this book and I guarantee you'll learn things you didn't know before!

A good photography book! Jan. 18 2011
By Kenneth - Published on
Format: Paperback
I bought this book for my little brother who is starting to get into photography and was really impressed at how useful this book is! The author, Tom Clark does an excellent job of providing information and showing how the technical aspect of photography changes your photograph. He also has photographs that demonstrate uses of different lens sizes, from wide angle to telephoto, the use of aperture and depth of field, shutter speeds, and also flash photography. This book is a must read for anyone who is involved in photography or just starting out and can be used as a great reference tool
Nikon D3200 Owner June 13 2013

I recently purchased the Nikon D3200 camera to replace my vintage Yashica TL Electro X film camera. I love this camera. But I also need to update my photographic skills for the new digital environment. The “Digital SLR Photography All-In-One For Dummies is great. There are actually nine books in one. 659 pages!! You will not go wrong with this book. You might also want to purchase “Digital Photography Composition For Dummies”. With these two books you will be well prepared to take great pictures.
