Product Description

From Booklist

"The game begins at half past six, / when dinos grab their hockey sticks." Rhyming couplets set the scene for a fantastical sports event: a hockey game played between opposing dinosaur teams: the Meat-Eaters and the Veggiesaurs. Gott's action-filled paintings amplify the sports moves and the players' comically exaggerated expressions, from the scowling face off between T. Rex and Tricera to the jubilant postgame celebration, covered by eager dino newscasters. Kids new to hockey may need help visualizing terms such as assist and check, but even if they don't have a full grasp of specifics, many children will be caught up by the inventive premise, the slapstick humor, and the energy in the words and pictures. By sorting teams by herbivores and carnivores, this also sneaks in a science lesson that is reinforced with a scoreboard visual. A final page promises a soccer-field sequel. Engberg, Gillian --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

My boys are sports fanatics and love dinosaurs and they absolutely LOVE these books. We have read each book - hockey, soccer, baseball and basketball each many many times and have football on order. I am even buying a set for my school library! I love these books because they are fun to read, have great pictures and have an easy rhythm which is nice for bedtime stories. My oldest even has a couple of the books memorized! I LOVE these books, buy them, you won't be disappointed.

Educational and amusing. Jan. 8 2009

We have had this book about 30 hours, and I think we've read it 15 times. My 3 year old, who is hockey obsessed, can't get enough of this book. It has great illustrations - and as a bonus, we are learning the names of dinosaurs. It also has a couple good sports lessons - never give up, play fair and yet, its only a game. I think that this is guarateed to be a family favorite.

This is a very cute book. My boys love both dinosaurs and hockey and this book is the perfect mix of both. My 2 year old and 6 year old both love it, and it is fun for mommy and daddy to read. The pictures are great!

Best book ever for my 3 year old dino enthusiast! Jan. 26 2008

What an excellent book! The writing is clever and the illustrations are amazing -- they have a lifelike quality and you can almost hear the dinos roaring. The illustrations manage to look appropriately frightening yet friendly at the same time, and my 3 year old can't get enough of this book. The best part is, the adults love reading it as much as the kids because it is so entertaining and exciting to read. The author uses the real names of the dinos, so it also is quite educational. The meateaters vs. veggiesaurs theme helped my toddler understand the different types of dinosaurs. What a cute touch that each dinosaur has his name on his hockey jersey and on the scoreboard. There are also several subtle yet important lessons that come out, such as when you behave badly you go in the "penalty box." And of course after insisting on reading this book at least 6 times per day, my toddler even finally understands how to play hockey and other ball games by analogy. This is one of the best children's books I've seen for a young dinosaur enthusiast.

Dinos for hockey lovers... May 7 2008

My 2 year old is a hockey nut. We got this for him and he loved it instantly. The book has wonderful illustrations and identifies all of the different kinds of dinosaurs. The wording (rhyming) makes it so fun to read that my 3 year old daughter likes it to even though it's not pink.
My son's favorite! Nov. 5 2013

This is my 2 1/2 year old son's all time favorite book! He begs me to read it every night! Two of his favorite things are hockey and dinosaurs. I love how this book combined both of these. I randomly came upon it on amazon and boy am I happy I did! Along the way we are teaching him about hockey. For example...the difference between linesmen and referees. The pictures are captivating and the flow of the text is easy and fun. We have had the book for about 6 months now. The pages have held up well for all of the use it has gotten. We took the book jacket off of it as it was too annoying to keep on but the cover is printed on the hard cover as well so they jacket isn't necessary.
