Kids will love this sweeping story of two brothers whose plane crashes on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where human beings live in harmony with dinosaurs--the herbivores, anyway. The carnivores present a problem, as the humans' defenses against them--a mystical power source called sunstones--are losing strength. As they try to save the island, Carl and David (Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller) struggle not only with tyrannosaurs and prehistoric crocodiles, but also with repressive Dinotopian traditions and a scheming malcontent (David Thewlis) who stirs up all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile, they also wrestle with each other over the lovely daughter of the mayor of Waterfall City (Katie Carr). The pacifist ideals of Dinotopia are refreshing, but it's the special effects that will hook viewers: riding on the backs of brachiosaurs, flying atop pteranadons, arguing in court with triceratops and ankylosaurs--anyone fascinated with dinosaurs (and who isn't?) will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. A host of British character actors also helps keep the human side of this four-hour miniseries lively; Alice Krige (also known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: The Next Generation) gets a much more benevolent role here. --Bret Fetzer

As far as T.v movies go this is a 3.5 star family fun movie. It's sort of a mix of,Plantet of the Apes(tv) Jurrassic Park,Land of the Lost (t.v if you remember those reruns or first runs). With a bit of disney live action story telling on the side. The fx is a match for JP- the Charecter Zippo is a show stealer.
When two boys, crash into the sea :Via there small private plain. They find themselves on a island that time forgot.Where dinosaurse and humans live in harmony.Although it appears in some cases the dinos are incharge. While looking for a way home the boys must adabt too this strange newlifestyle in the process they become involed in aiding in the saving of Dinotopia-the Sun Stones(gems)that power the city and protect it from Carnovors is failing all over the island.New ones must be found. The humans &Dinos are so caught up in tradition that they are ready too let there world die.So its up too the boys ,Zippo ,the mayors daughter and a wicked shop keeper too save Dinotopia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for little kids, including the one in us Nov 25 2002
By Jeff
Format:DVD
I could go on how horrible the script was, starting with the plot holes (e.g. their plane crashes in the ocean in the middle of a hurricane, they swim the rest of the night and then walk out of the surf the next morning like they just did a slow lap around the track). The dialogue is a joke. The characters are one-dimensional, predictable and stereotypical. Perhaps the only thing worse than the script is the acting. And perhaps the only thing worse than the acting is the directing.

Having said all that, however, the bottom line is my younger kids thoroughly enjoyed it. And when I could turn off my adult critic and watch it with the eyes of an eight-year old I enjoyed it too. And that's who it's for. Eight to ten year olds (not necessarily in a chronological sense).

The truth is that the special effects are quite good -- the true star of the show. And the Dinotopia setting, after all is said and done, is enchanting. Except for one stupid scene where the lead male swims naked (apparently) with the lead female the movie is absolutely clean. That makes a four-starrer in my book, despite everything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you critics say F-A-N-T-A-S-Y? Dec 29 2003

Jeeezzz...

Some of you are looking for logical plot endings, complex characters, and great dialog.

This movie is meant to ENTERTAIN... This is not meant to be a realistic dinosaur movie -- it's FANTASY so cut it some slack.

By the way, I thought the sets were awesome -- made me want to visit Waterfall City. And the acting wasn't that bad either.
