Two reasons to buy this album...,
This review is from: Director's Cut 2 LP Gatefold (LP Record)
1-As a collectable. It's simply gorgeous! Two beautiful 180g pieces of vinyl heaven.Fourteen page glossy 'program' booklet with lyrics in a gatefold package. It literally is worth it's weight. Keep it sealed...in five years it'll be worth three times what you paid here. 2-It's brilliant! I too, was wary of this album. I had heard some excerpts and read tons of luke-warm reviews but I sat down with anticipation...after all, this is Kate. It was like hearing these songs again for the first time. The sparse production makes it all the more appealing. Even 'Deeper Understanding' made sense with the 'auto-tuned' computer vocal. And the songs from 'Red Shoes' are better than the originals. Just to hear the 'Shoes' tracks on vinyl is a bonus as trying to find an original copy is near impossible without an expense account. They are the standouts on this piece of luxury. The Nick Loweish/Crazy Little Thing Called Love version of 'Rubberband Girl' is worth the price of admission alone. Buy it. The only disappointment was not getting a digital download with the package.

This review is from: Director's Cut (Audio CD)
The Director's Cut' is a beleagured, misguided and lazy attempt to recapture aspects of 'The Sensual World' and 'The Red Shoes' which our Kate believes were missed at the time. However that original magic that was is in the original recordings will never be recaptured as none of the tracks included here bar 'Rubber Band Girl','Deeper Understanding' and 'This Woman's Work' sound much different from the original versions except for poorer vocals, instrumentation and very poor sound quality. Over the entire CD not one track stands out as being improved upon or even worthy of inclusion here. So I ask myself time and time again what was the point of this album and the answer to me is none at all. This album could easily be imagined as a left over box of demo's from the original recordings in 1989 and 1993 respectively except these recordings were from the days when Kate's vocals were out of tune. From the start of the 'yes' on 'Flower Of The Mountain' I find myself cringing all the way through this track. There was nothing wrong with the original 'The Sensual World' and if there's nothing wrong you don't fix it. The next two tracks 'Lily' and 'Songs Of Solomon' are not too bad compared to the other duff tracks here but again they are not so different from the originals I find myself asking what on earth was the point. I loved the original 'The Red Shoes' album. The inclusion's from here 'Rubberband Girl', And So Is Love 'Lily','Songs Of Solomon', 'Moments Of Pleasure' and the title track 'The Red Shoes'. If any of the above were perhaps done in a different style maybe but the one attempt at doing this 'Rubberband Girl is in a sort of gunge/american country style where if you didn't like it before .. you sure will love the original now. 'The Sensual World' album revists here from 22 years ago here are the worst of the lot. 'Deeper Understanding' has been transformed from a beautiful, touching song into a 6 min 31 sec NIGHTMARE. The human computer voice chorus is an embarrassment when compared to the wonderful original. On the magnificent 'This Woman's Work' an attempt to do someting different has been made but loses the urgency, emotion and potency of the original song and replaced with a 6 min 32 second ambient piece of shopping mall background muzak which would go great if you are having a cholonic bowel irrigation treatment Never Be Mine' is one of the better recordings here but again it is so simillar to the original I ask myself ...why even bother. So to sum it up in lyrics of 'Hammer Horror' ...was this the right thing to do' as our Kate asks herself on 'Lionheart'. The answer is NO DEAR. Your original recordings gave me many 'Moments of Pleasure' and still do. This album is a mistake which i cannot be be kind to.
