Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

On this 1980 tour de force, Prince produced the template for most of his '80s albums: a mixture of lust and longing, synth pop combined with gut bucket rock and roll. Although this was his third CD, Dirty Mind was the one that truly established "When You Were Mine", which still ranks as one of his best songs, ever. The gender- and race-bending Dirty Mind was nasty and freaky--and you could dance to it. Still can. --Amy Linden

5.0 out of 5 stars Funkateers, join the "partyup", May 3 2004
By

This review is from: Dirty Mind (Audio CD)
I've been revisiting a lot of Prince's stuff in the wake of his new album and recent acquisition of his HITS/B Side 3 disc set. "Dirty Mind" is the type of album that I was unable to fully appreciate when it came out.(...) Listening to it again, this album is a rocking electrofunk that pushes the envelope lyrically. "Head", "Uptown", and "Partyup" are all out funk jams. Clean guitars trade jabs with popping slap bass on these tracks. And the man just lays down on the one. Prince would have better selling albums and later stuff vaulted him into superstar status and pop trailblazer. But if you want to see the best of pre-"Purple Rain" Prince at his funkiest with tight songs, this is the album to go with.

-5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars turn of a decade, Dec 11 2003
This review is from: Dirty Mind (Audio CD)
I would say this was a great way to start out the 80's- a nice risque album complete with the "dirty" cover. This was never one of my favorite Prince albums yet it still had an amazing amount of playtime in my stereo. I like every song- my favorites are "Do it All Night" and "Head". However, I never appreciated "Gotta Broken Heart Again" until I heard him perform it recently. I have to admit I slept on this one- it's a fine piece of work that defined the sincere sexuality and talent to expect from a star in the making. If you want to dig into the past for music that opened the doors to a new sound of funk, pick up "Dirty Mind"

4.0 out of 5 stars What many consider to be Prince's breakout album, Dec 8 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dirty Mind (Audio CD)
Prince's third album, "Dirty Mind", was/is quite an album. It has great music and lyrics that leave little, very little to the imagination. and then there's the cover...... The album starts off with the title track, which is safe enough (lyricly), and has a killer synth line done by band member Dr. Fink (matt fink). Nothing outstanding, but not too shabby either.Next there's "when you were mine" (later covered by Cyndi Lauper), which is sheer pop perfection. Truly Prince at his best. Very reminicent of 60s pop, but still unique."Do it all night" is up next. I think the title pretty much tells you what this song is about. Nothing too special about this one, the "dud" of this album. Now there's "gotta broken heart again", the ballad. Great vocal delivery."Uptown" is next, one of Prince's first minor "hits".Great synth.Aw, here we go, now we're onto "head". And yes, i know what you're thinking----you're right. Very funky, sexually frank song. A song that would pave the way for quite possibly one of Prince's favorite subjects. Here he shares vocals with new band member Lisa coleman. Girl had guts. Now moving onto "sister". Seems safe enough, right? Well, nope, it 's not. Pretty far from it infact. It's a 1 minute and 33 second long song about incest. Enough said. The last song, "partyup" is an anti war song written by Morris Day. Day gave Prince permission to use the lyrics in exchange for a record deal.Somewhat rowdy and angry, this'll surely bring out you're inner punk.Great album, but don't play this if you have prudes or kids around. You've been warned.
