5.0 out of 5 stars Disgaea 2 break the limits, July 16 2011
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days (Video Game)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet game, May 19 2011

Awesome game. If you've played any of the other disgaea games you'll love this one. It's basically the same game platform with a few new add-ons. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disgaea 2 has improved over Disgaea (impressions on voice acting, system, story), May 1 2010

While I did not play Disgaea2 on PlayStation, I played Disgaea 1 on DS just before playing Disgaea2 on PSP. The following is my impressions on the graphics, voice, system, story and extras of this game.

First impression is it's high resolution over Nintendo DS. Everything just looks so much sharper than what a DS can display (This is also true if comparing Disgaea 1 PSP with its DS counterpart). There isn't that much animation other than all the special moves animation during battles. Many of these animations, well done and look cool and fancy, gets repetitive after several hours of game play, but fortunately, the animation can be turned off/skipped in option menu.

Second is the full voiceover that the PSP version has. The UMD contains both English and Japanese voice, and I (always) picked Japanese. The Japanese voice is simply superior period. The leading voice actor and actress are both very well known among anime fans. The English voiceover sounds too unnatural and exaggerated.

The main character, Adell, (CA:Midorikawa Akiri [Gundam Wing,Scryed, etc])sounds cool and determined which is his signature voice. The English counterpart sounds like a little kid (for the about 10 sentences he said before I turned the power off). The leading female character Rozaine is voice by Tamura Yukari (Magical Girl Nanoha, Hidorashi, and many other, etc) changed her normal "little girl" voice to a more mature tone with princess style wording (sounds noble, self-centered and cocky). Another interesting voiceover is the character Yukimaru, who is a shinobi(female ninja). I cannot recall who did her voice, but she ends every sentence (literally every) with "gozaru" which equals "desu", but is an ending phrase usually spoken by samurai in Edo period. So this made her sound old-school and single headed. The english subtitle tried to translate this with something like "ahem", "whem" or something along this line, but still cannot get it quite right.

The game system is mostly identical to Disgaea DS. The Dark Assembly, Dimension Gate, Hospital, Item World, Geo panel, etc are all there. I don't know how much they changed this PSP remake from the original PS version. I believe it has taken some elements from Disgaea3 on PS3 like, may be, team attack. There are a few new monster and character classes added as well. On the other hand, Item World has "mystery room" and "space pirate" randomly appearing.

The story, summed up in one sentence, is better, more sensible, more interesting, and more of a story. Disgaea1's has almost no story line or rather, the story element is limiting to the Angel Flonne. However, Disgaea2 has a complete story that is enjoyable, with humorous references to Disagea1 and a little unexpected twist (may not be unexpected for everyone). And finally it features the extra story of "Dark Hero Days".

The title "Dark Hero Days" is referring to Axel's chapter, which will be accessible after clearing the game once normally. His story consists with 4 extra chapters featuring himself pretending if he was still mega popular... looking for TV, movie jobs and hiding the truth from his family...

The bottomline line is if you like Disgaea kind of SRPG than this is good classic pick. However, I won't compare Disgaea direcly with FF Tactics or Super Robot Wars. I think Disgaea's peer would be Generation of Chaos series.
