Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In an age of frenetic debates over low-carb vs. low-fat diets, O'Neil and Webb advocate for an indisputable method for weight loss: calories out must exceed calories in, while simultaneously acknowledging that dieting doesn't have to focus on deprivation. They draw on their experiences (O'Neil was a CNN producer and Webb is a nutrition writer with a Ph.D.) to create "a girlfriend's guide to eating out, eating in, entertaining, and traveling." Though they claim it's "the very first diet book for glamour girls of all ages and sizes," it's actually more of a lifestyle book, likely to appeal to the demographic of women who read fitness magazines and have 15 or fewer pounds to lose, or want to maintain a healthy weight while living a busy, changing life. The authors give "the dish" on nutrition, eating in, dining out, drinking, exercising, dressing to maximize your assets and even cheating (in moderation), with each author occasionally sharing a personal experience or preference. Throughout, O'Neil and Webb present sidebars (and occasional recipes) from experts, chefs, restaurateurs and magazine editors including Wolfgang Puck, Felidia Bastianach and Bon Appétit editor Barbara Fairchild. Perky writing sometimes belies the deep knowledge and research underlying the nutritional information presented here, yet the authors do a tremendous service by digesting the latest studies on such controversial subjects such as soy ("How much is too much?"), raw food diets and supplements. Their clear analyses will help readers wade through the maze of conflicting nutrition information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a scene out of "Sex & The City", Jun 14 2004
This review is from: The Dish: On Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous! (Hardcover)
Monday, June 14th, 10 PM. My boyfriend and I seat ourselves at a sidewalk table at "Cafe Boulud" on Manhattan's Upper East Side. There's a boisterous table next to us, and we recognize CNN's Carolyn O'Neil as one of the revelers. They are celebrating something, so, curious New Yorkers that we are, we ask them what is it? A book called "The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous." Remember that scene in "Sex & the City" when Carrie's in Paris and the Parisian bookstore throws her a party and she doesn't show? Well, it's like that, except it's New York, she shows, and everybody (including all the strangers at the adjoining tables) has a swell time, they pass the book around and we all get to take a peek (I hogged it for close to an hour). The bad news is: it's their only copy! We can look, but we can't buy it. The good news is we go home, go on Amazon and order it. If Carrie Bradshaw wrote a book on how to eat well and still fit into her fabulous outfits, this would be it. It's whimsical, but underlying it all is the serious topic of getting us to eat healthy without becoming obnoxious food cops. I love living in this city, and running into Carolyn (and her co-author Densie Webb and all her other friends) is one of the reasons why.

Finally a book that makes sense and has real world application! It is so fun and easy to read - I could hardly put it down. I can relate to the information in the book and actually put it to good use - my kitchen makeover is almost complete! All of my bridesmaids are getting a copy too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eat Great and Look Great, May 11 2006
By KatChap 8 "KT" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Dish: On Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous! (Hardcover)
The Dish helped me...finally...learn what nutrition was really about. NOT about all the foods I can't eat, but what I should be adding to my diet. The recipes are easy and tasty and really pretty to make. There's even a chapter on what to drink and what to eat at airports and restaurants. The Dish helps me even when I leave my home kitchen...and truthfully, away from home is where I make the most food choices. It's The Dish on real life nutrition.
