Review

"Multi-authored by extremely authoritative scientists and clinicians. In their preface, the Editors, as a user-friendly gesture, suggest that readers who want a simple clinical overview can read 6 of 46 chapters and then refer to the other chapters for detailed information about specific disorders or treatment modalities. This is a superb book by an international cadre of authorities, and I recommend it for physicians who deal with dizziness/vertigo"--Robert B. Daroff, M.D. in Neurology

"Valuable for all physicians who deal with vertigo and dizziness. Scientists interested in the vestibular system will find a lot of valuable information."--The New England Journal of Medicine

"One major problem with all multiauthored books is the lack of cohesiveness. The editors overcome this problem by including one or two overview chapters at the beginning of each of the first three sections of the book. These are key chapters that are very readable by individuals at any level. Other chapters are excellent for more detail....The book stands out from the rest as an excellent reference book and should appealto physicals who see a substantial number of patients with vertigo. Basic scientists working in the vestibular system will also find this book relevant due to the inclusion of pertinent anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology in several of the chapters, many of which are written by individuals with a strong basic science background....These two neurologists are tops in their field and have contributed greatly to our understanding of patients with vestibular disorders."--Ronald J. Tusa, M.D. Ph.D. Annals of Neurology

"Disorders of the Vestibular System has set a standard for textbooks dealing with the diagnosis and management of vestibular diseases...The text is extremely comprehensive and state of the art....This textbook belongs in the library of neurologists, otolaryngologists, and neurotologists as a reference resource. Resident directors also sould be well advised to add it to their recommended reading list."--The American Journal of Otology

"Disorders of the Vestibular System has set a standard for textbooks dealing with the diagnosis and management of vestibular diseases....The text is extremely comprehensive and state of the art."The American Journal of Otology

"The most ambitious and comprehensive work that discusses the vestibular system....Well-received by those who have an interest in managing patients with vestibular disease."--Annals of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

"An excellent text book which is well written and thoroughly enjoyable to read...The entire text is well referenced and the index is extremely useful...A landmark text book..."--Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences

"This is a great book. A definitive one, with the value of being both a reference work and a clinically useful text. A "must have" for all otolaryngologists involved with dizzy patients."--Australian Journal of Otolaryngology

4.0 out of 5 stars Vertigo a challeging symptom, April 1 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Disorders of the Vestibular System (Hardcover)
It is a comprehensive book dealing with vestibular physiology and pathology. It covers the possible causes of vestibular disorders and the clinical presentation as well as the differential diagnosis. I found it very helpful as a resident in trying to understand the pathophysiology of vestibular dysfunction. I also found it helpful in classifying the etiology as peripheral versus central.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disorders of the Vestibular System is a first rate source, Mar 25 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Disorders of the Vestibular System (Hardcover)
This is an up-to-date, comprehensive review of disorders of the vestibular system written by leaders in the field. The book is divided into four parts: basic vestibular mechanisms, clinical evaluation, common vestibular diseases, and treatment of vertigo. Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system with emphasis on clinically relevant material. Part II describes features in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation that help the clinician determine the probable site of lesion and likely pathophysiology. The history is emphasized since it is the critical first step for understanding the patient's complaints. Part III covers the differential diagnosis and specific treatments of common neurologic disorders. One chapter provides an overview of the common syndromes seen in neurotology. Part IV discusses general principles of treatment that are relevant to all vestibular disorders. This book should be useful to all physicians who treat patients complaining of dizziness. It can be used as a text by students entering the field or as a comprehensive source of reference to those in internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurology, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Top-notch Resource, Jun 17 2011
By Ben - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Disorders of the Vestibular System (Hardcover)
Even though it has been more than 10 years since this book came out and it deals with a changing clinical field, it is still a top-notch resource to which researchers will refer frequently at the beginning of their efforts, due to the comprehensive and detailed treatments found therein. You will find some interesting things in here that you will not find in other texts on the subject. It is not a book for general audiences, however.
