Breakthrough Hardware Technology

High Definition Touchscreen Display

Rich, HD video. Beautiful, vivid photos. Crisp, detailed text. Kindle Fire HD features a 1280x800 high definition LCD display that brings your content to life.

Reduced Screen Glare

Most tablet displays are made up of two pieces of glass - an LCD on the bottom and a touch sensor on the top, separated by an air gap. This air gap allows light to come through the touch sensor and reflect off the LCD, causing added glare for the user. Kindle Fire HD solves this air gap problem by laminating the touch sensor and the LCD together into a single layer of glass, creating a display that's easy to view, even in overhead light.

Richer Colours at Wider Angles

Like many tablets, Kindle Fire HD uses In-Plane Switching (IPS) to improve colour reproduction - but displays that only use IPS still appear washed out at various angles, such as when laid sideways for reading in bed, flat on a table, or held between you and a friend when sharing a movie. Kindle Fire HD addresses this issue by applying an advanced polarizing filter directly to the LCD panel. This results in a display that shows the same deep contrast and rich, detailed colour when viewed at any angle.

Exclusive Dolby Audio

Kindle Fire HD uses the power of Dolby Digital Plus to create a world class audio experience, with or without headphones. Dolby Digital Plus includes technology used to adjust volume, create virtual surround sound, and deliver an outstanding audio experience. Kindle Fire HD is designed to automatically optimize the audio profile based on what you are doing, such as watching a video, listening to music, or talking on Skype. It even optimizes the audio differently when you have headphones plugged in, so you can just sit back and enjoy.

Dual-Driver Stereo Speakers

Big sound. Compact design. Kindle Fire HD features dual-driver stereo speakers on both sides of the display for a wide field of sound similar to that of a home stereo. And with this much power, we can push our speakers hard. The result: deeper bass in your music, loud, rumbling movie soundtracks and room-filling stereo sound without distortion, even at higher volumes.

Powerful HD Processor

A rich HD display requires a powerful processor and optimized software to drive it. Kindle Fire HD uses a fast dual-core processor with an Imagination PowerVR graphics core that can process 6.2 billion floating-point operations per second, so even graphically intensive games run smoothly and render stunning imagery. We also tuned the graphics pipeline and touch handling software to eliminate delays between when you touch the screen and when the application responds.

Over 11 hours of Battery Life

Kindle Fire HD is optimized to deliver high performance with low battery consumption, delivering over 11 hours of watching videos, browsing the web, playing music, or reading.

Plenty of Storage for HD Content

For an HD device, 8GB of storage is not enough. High definition content is substantially larger - for example, on average, an SD movie is 500MB, and an HD movie is 2GB. Because of this, Kindle Fire HD offers plenty of on-device storage, as well as free, unlimited cloud storage for your Amazon content.

Two Antennas, Better Bandwidth

Kindle Fire HD is the first tablet to feature dual Wi-Fi antennas and Multiple In/Multiple Out (MIMO) technology for powerful, HD-ready Wi-Fi. This allows for reception or transmission over both antennas simultaneously to increase capacity and reliability. So you'll enjoy fewer dropped connections and fast media streaming.

Dual-Band Support

Many Wi-Fi devices, from other tablets to baby monitors, only operate in the 2.4 GHz band. The more of these devices that you and your neighbours have operating in that band, the slower your connection. Kindle Fire HD is capable of switching automatically between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies, which will allow you to use this less-congested 5 GHz band for better range and less interference.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great tablet… if you're American June 19 2013
By Salinger TOP 500 REVIEWER
Size Name:16 GB
The value of this tablet isn't in the form factor or price. For the same cost you can get many comparable tablets which give you access to the full Google Play store, not just the fraction of it that Amazon allows. The real value of this tablet, at least in the US and elsewhere, is that you get access to hundreds of thousands of movies, TV shows and music to stream all included in your Amazon Prime membership. …just not in Canada.

Oh yes, we have Prime as well, and we pay the same price for it as our American cousins, but we get nothing more than slightly speedier delivery. In the US they get the speedy delivery, the ability to borrow Kindle books for free and, as mentioned, access to hundreds of thousands of free streaming movies, TV shows and songs.

I understand the complexity of trying to negotiate media rights in Canada, it's not all Amazon's fault that it's so difficult. It is, however, Amazon's decision to charge us the same price for Prime membership while only giving us a tiny fraction of its functionality here. Prime is key to why the Kindle Fire HD is so popular in the US. Because of its useless nature here in Canada, there are far better tablet alternatives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed July 26 2013
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER
Size Name:16 GB|Verified Purchase
I was excited to get my Kindle Fire HD and even pre-ordered it. When I received it though I was very disappointed. The Canadian version is not really supported at all. I get the feeling that Amazon is not really interested in maintaining Canadian customers. You cannot download any apps except from the Amazon store, and even those are not all available to Canada. I can get fb and my email, but other than that it is mainly just a fancy e-reader. I tried to return it, but found that after 2 weeks they won't give a refund, so...I went out and bought a Kobo Arc and it works great. It loads apps and everything you would expect a tablet to do, not at all like the Kindle Fire HD. DO NOT BUY

1.0 out of 5 stars overrated tablet July 24 2013
By kikayc
Size Name:16 GB
I would still choose the nexus or iPad vs the kindle. There is not much content for this tablet compared to apple or Google. It does have high res but it is useless if you cannot stream any videos. The kindle`s selling point recalls is amazon prime but you don't really get anything here in Canada except speedy delivery. Paying $70 for prime is a rip off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Canadian customers BEWARE July 24 2013
Size Name:16 GB
Canadian customers cannot download FREE card games from the apps store. We get a message: because we don't have an American Credit Card. Amazon help line cannot help. They blame it on the vendor of the game. NOT TRUE ! I downloaded the same Karman card games on my Galaxy Tab 2 and then transfered it to my Kindle Fire !!! Imagine!!! No problem with Samsung Galaxy Tab and nothing but agravation with Kindle Fire for Canadian.
Perhaps Amazon's management will someday see the light for Canadian customers.

In addition to the other disappointments in the review, I am terribly disappointed with the three prime features for which I bought the machine:
1. Of what use are the Bookmarks? There is none as far as I can find
2. If one can actually tag, the instructions for it are well hidden.
3. After making one's notes throughout a book, one can stare at them all at once. But what good are they given that they cannot be exported. One is shakled to the macine. This problem is cleverly passed over in the promotions. This is my last purchase of anything from this shark infested company. Amazon does not appear to be aware that we customers have options. (Do they ever read our comments or is this merely a way to let us vent our frustrations, disappointments, and the ways we have been fooled, without bothering them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Fire Sept. 8 2013
Size Name:32 GB|Verified Purchase
Great product, does what I want when I want and is great at what it is designed for. For the most part. Seriously miffed that you can't change background/lock screen; lack of personal touch or personality at all is a serious downer. Covered in adds and recommendations, it doesn't feel like it is "mine." More like I'm using an eReader in a store.
But as mentioned does do it's jobs as an e-reading, music playing, web surfing, app tablet. Can't complain too much!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Fire does it all for a affordable price! June 17 2013
By JR
Size Name:32 GB|Verified Purchase
I have an iPad (9.5"), love it, does alot of cool things that I never use for an expensive price. Apple products are great (have lots of apple in the household), however, this device does everything I need for half the cost (equivalent $429 for iPad Mini 32 GB). My iPad has not been used by my family since I received the 32 GB Kindle Fire HD 7".

PROS - I haven't had the Fire very long but needless to say I am impressed with what I received for the cost. The product is thin, portable and light. It accually fits in some of my coat pockets. I am a avid kindle book purchaser and to be honest reading books on the Fire is much more enjoyable and easier than the iPad. The screen also great in glare/sunlight. There is an office suite for Microsoft products but I haven't used the software yet but impressed that it accually has it preloaded. I do believe if you want more office capability with you have to purchase the paid app which is around $11 I think. Love the dual band antenna WiFi, works great. Games are fun on this device, I have the NBA Jams app and it performs/looks great, controls are really functional (find them easier than the ipad). I watch Netfix and Crackle regulary on the Fire and the HD screen is great. What impressed me is how loud and clear the speakers are on this device when not using headphones. The start up time is minimal and actual normal operation of the device is fast. Camera does all I need it to do (Skype with family) and clear picture (I dont need it to take pictures, phone and camera does that). Plus I think people walking around taking pics with there tablets look hilarious so the fact there is no rear camera is of no concern to me (others may feel different). Can add multiple email accounts to the device (outlook and gmail on mine) and sync's contacts/calendars.
