It is not my cup of tea. I did not enjoy it. I think Cafe Blue was so much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars six stars Jan. 18 2002
Format:Audio CD
six stars is how i rate this disc, i have heard most of Patricia's albums and enjoy "a distortion of love" the most, this album represents my ideal in jazz. i am not a conisseur of traditional jazz, however, this disc, not being traditional, i consider it to be the best in my collection. i wish everyone could enjoy it as much as i do. the tracks are very dynamic, not repetitive in style at all. i have listened to this album reapeatedly by putting it on shuffle play, it just doesn't get old. Patricia has an amazing voice, as one will quickly notice at the end of track 3 "you stepped out of a dream". also track 9 "my girl" done as improv- is simple and powerful,- and quite simply amazing. The performers fall together so well, you will immediately "feel" the talent that was brought together in this album. I have had the privelege on more than one occasion,to listen to this album as well as others on a very high end, audiophile system,(LINN) and this is certainly an audiophile quality recording. I can't say enough about it, i'll soon have all of Patricia's albums, i wish her well and i hope for new releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Patricia Barber album. March 10 2001
Format:Audio CD
I have all of PB's albums and this is my favorite with Cafe Blue a close second. This album was released in 1992 and is often overlooked, Cafe Blue and Modern Cool are usually mentioned when you think of Patricia Barber albums. This album is very smooth sounding and has a late night jazz club easiness that is very relaxing to listen to. My favorite track is "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". I also like "Summertime" and "My Girl" which showcase PB's talent of taking someones elses song and putting a new spin on it. If you are a Patricia Barber fan and like Cafe Blue get this album you will not be sorry.

My favorite, ("Verse" being second). Her voice, composing. piano all in top form on every piece. Wins you over the first time through. I own and listen to most of her cds and this one is powerful and accessible all the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concur Oct. 24 2012

I got this album thanks to an audiophile review, and the spaciousness of the sound recording does indeed help draw me in.

But what brings me back to it so often is the sheer creativity. Like some of the other commenters, I listen to it more than Cafe Blue.

And, yes, that first beat is a revelation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flailing for words that do this music justice!!! Oct. 28 2009
By Pilgrim - Published on Amazon.com

I'm a musician as well as someone who adores great music, regardless of genre. I'm always on the lookout for new artists and new styles of music. But rarely am I surprised. This CD is one such time. From the very first note, I knew that I was in for a VERY rare treat! Kind of like when you stumble upon a bottle of red that renders you speechless with its complexity and sensuality. You just want to savor every last sip! What happens now is that I try to come up with words that are adequate to describe or praise Patricia Barber enough. And truthfully... there are none. Her music paints pictures you've never seen before. It tastes like the finest five-star cuisine you have ever experienced. And it caresses you like the most exquisite, passionate lover imaginable. On one hand, I want to keep Ms. Barber all to myself for fear that when everyone else finds her the inevitable will happen... fame and the big SELL-OUT. On the other hand, I want her to bathe in the praise that is most certainly, most deservedly, earned. I want her to know the success that belongs to others far less accomplished. But most of all I want to hear her grow and expand and keep making the music that only she can. So like a very fine bottle of red I will share Ms. Barber with everyone who will dare experience perfection. "A Distortion of Love" is a meritage, a blend of Patricia, Marc Johnson, Adam Nussbaum and Wolfgang Muthspiel. Producer Brian Bacchus squeezed out every succulent drop from these players, any of which stands on their own. So enough talking. Get this amazing CD. And when you do, put it on, open up that bottle of red you've been holding back, light a candle, and prepare to be moved as never before.
