5.0 out of 5 stars Structures - Divided By April 9 2012
By Joel Andrews TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Structures -- This is a great grindcore band, wading into the waters of mathcore, from Toronto, Canada. On this album they are back with a tour de force sound. A lot of good groove riffs, with chromatic blast passages on the guitar. The guest vocal tracks almost have an "Against Me" sound, very nicely done! This band is primarily a grindcore band that ventures into the realm of mathcore, but not going so far into it that you get lost. A lot of mathcore bands are too extreme and harder to listen to, this band seems to blend the element just right.

The recording, a strong effort from Structures, well recorded, drums and vocals sound great. The only parts that need a bit of addressing are the heavily scooped mids on the guitars, a lot of heavier acts suffer from this. With detuned 7-string guitars, the heavy mid scoop tends to make them sound either muddy or too thin on lead passages. Also, the bass playing is buried into the muddy mix, so you have no idea what the bass player is playing, other then exactly the main root note of the chords.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Good luck champ, now go break a leg." Jun 6 2012

Whether you choose to be a fan of them or not, you can't deny that Structures has taken the djent/hardcore scene by storm. They have a certain uniqueness to them that really makes them stick out from the other bands of their genre. But regardless, they have been met with mixed reception upon their signing to Sumerian Records, and Structures has honestly just become of them "love it or hate it" bands.

"/" (or "Divided By") is their debut album, and a great one at that. Packed to the core with technicality, punkish-type vocals (with some really nice cleans as well) and "go [censored] yourself" lyrics, Structures came to deliver, and deliver they did. The only real issue I have with this album is its insane clipping issue (a typical production problem that went TERRIBLY overlooked in this case). It tends to make this album hard to listen to at higher volumes, but alas, it really doesn't stop this album from being an enjoyable listen.

If you want a great hard-hitting album of the djent/hardcore genre, then pick this one up and give it a flip. It's definitely an album you have to listen to at least once. Structures is a very promising band that definitely have a very bright future ahead of them.

Highlights: "At Last[t]," "Hydroplaning," "Clockwork," "Tunnel Vision," and "/."

Great band. They have a sound all their own but do incorporate a lot of Djent and other familiar metal sounds. Its different enough to sound its own.
