5.0 out of 5 stars Good deal, Jan 23 2009

I admit I ordered this box because of the price. After all, 10 CDs for the price of one. When it arrived the day after I ordered, I was almost too stunned to play it. But of course I did. The sound quality is excellent -- almost too good. Even when brand new, the 78s had a hiss in the background. That's just a minor quibble. The variety is excellent -- all the greats and many others who are little known. The great standards are covered although not always by who you'd expect. I had another minor quibble about the choice of artist for High Society. I've always been partial to Sidney Bechet's version. He's here, but not on High Society. Scott Joplin is also here -- not someone doing Joplin. The company issuing this set is the same as the one which produced the Quadromania series of jazz and classical sets. As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat the combination of quality and price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trad Jazz, July 11 2010
This review is from: Dixieland Jazz This Was The (Audio CD)
This is an excellent overview of Traditional Jazz, Dixie, etc. Some historic performers. This is a good start for someone looking to build a Dixie library. You can't go wrong. Buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars "This was the Jazz Age.", Aug 12 2009

This review is from: Dixieland Jazz This Was The (Audio CD)
Dixieland Jazz is a ten CD box set of 200 recordings by various artists recorded mostly in the 1920s and issued by Membran in a sturdy cardboard box which,as is traditional for these sets, has no liner notes. no personnel and no recording dates.

Each of the ten CDs is encased in a sturdy cardbard sleeve with the titles, the artists and the times correctly printed on the sleeve. In this case, at least, there are quite a few tracks that are unfamiliar to me and some liner notes with a bit more explanation for these 200 tracks would have been very helpful.

Titles included are tracks such as Sobbin' Blues by King Oliver, Kater Street Rag by Bennie Moten's KC Orchestra, Cannon Ball Blues by Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers and 197 more. I have to admit most of these tracks are unfamiliar to me. Even some of the familiar titles are done by artists other than the old familiar versions which makes this bargain priced box set a container of constantly different discoveries.

The Dixieland Jazz title for this set is unfortunate, it should have been named Traditional Jazz, the ironic name for the once revolutionary music of the roaring teens and twenties, embraced by flaming youth across the globe.

So the sound is okay, the music is rife with new discoveries, at least for me,
and the price is more than fair, usually anyway.

Tell me what more you could want if you'e looking for the traditional revolutionary music that roared through the world of the 1920s and beyond. If this music is to your
taste you will have no regrets about buying this potent box of Jazz Age dynamite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set!, Sep 19 2009

Excellent music, if you like traditional Jazz. Not really Dixieland, as has been pointed out.

Couple of comments: there's a distinct hiss on many of the songs, especially on the earlier CDs. Not surprising.

Also, the cardboard sleeves make for a very tight fit. Okay if you take the CDs out once and add them to your digital music library, but for everyday use, you might want to find a different home for them.

Great value on the Amazon Marketplace -- works out to 10 cents a song!
