Product Description

From the moment Jamie Foxx throws off a filthy, tattered blanket to reveal a richly muscled back crisscrossed with long scars, it's obvious that Django Unchained will be both true to its exploitation roots but also clear-eyed about the misery that's being exploited. Django (Foxx), a slave set free in the years before the Civil War, joins with a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (the marvelous Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds), who has promised to help Django rescue his wife (Kerry Washington), who's still enslaved to a gleeful and grandiose plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio, plainly relishing the opportunity to play an out-and-out villain). What follows is a wild and woolly ride, crammed with all the pleasures one expects from a revenge fantasy written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Plot-wise, some things happen a little too easily (for example, Django instantly becomes a master gunslinger), but the moral perspective is not glib. For all its lurid violence and jazzy dialogue, this is a still-rare movie that paints slavery for what it was: a brutal, dehumanizing practice that allowed a privileged few to profit from the suffering of many, a practice guaranteed by the gun and the whip. Think of it as the antidote to Gone with the Wind. Tarantino is more heartfelt in Django Unchained than in any of his previous movies--without sacrificing any of the pell-mell action, tension, and delicious language that made Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and Pulp Fiction so very enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Corbucci's best film! Sep 18 2001
Format:DVD
Don't listen to any claims made made for Bullet For A General, Django is without a doubt the best non-Leone spaghetti Western of all time. The opening scene (blue-clad Nero carrying a saddle over his shoulder and dragging a coffin through the gooiest mud in film history)is beautiful. Corbucci's direction is more controlled here than anywhere else--less zooms, less jarring close-ups, and neater editing. And Django has to be one of the first action heroes to fire a heavy machine gun from the hip (without even pulling the trigger, no less!).

But make no mistake. This is Italian exploitation--love it or hate it. An ear is cut off, prostitutes fight in the mud, and our hero's hands are crushed in gory detail that would make One-Eyed Jacks mumble in disgust. Don't expect John Ford here. But if you're looking for something different, are curious about spaghetti Westerns but afraid to buy any because so many are horrible--then this is the movie for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Finest Dec 12 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
A Magnum Opus of Italian westerns, just short of Leone's classic films. Iconic imagery and an excellent performance by Franco Nero have led to many homages and references in other (contemporary) works, notably Lucas and Tarantino.

The Blu-ray presentation is the best available, using a recently discovered print. Film grain is present, but perfectly understandable given the age of the film. I'd recommend checking out the DVDBeaver review for in-depth analysis of the image itself and technical details.

I'd recommend the Italian audio track and not the dub-- the former is the original presentation as meant to be seen. The dub itself is admittedly a poor job, and distracts from the experience of the film.

A great film from a great era in filmmmaking, and not to be missed. Such films heralded more complex characters who were morally ambivalent and less clear-cut, which is a good thing. John Wayne-type characters who always had the moral justification for everything they do are not realistic or interesting-- the Italian westerns allowed the characters, even the heroes, to have a dark side and have shades of grey in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars REVIEW Oct 7 2009
Format:DVD
My main concern was some difference from Clint Eastwood style and some brutality. This spaghetti western gives you the real image. It is a collector's classic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Movie Ever
This ranks as one of the worst movies I have ever seen. What more can I say. I bought this by mistake as I wanted Django Unchained.

So bad that it is somewhat funny. Props, mainly machine gun is really fake thus ruining any credibility of the story.
