Book Description

July 17 2012
People have a great curiosity and many misunderstandings about how dogs think, act and perceive the world. They are also curious about the social and emotional lives of dogs. They wonder whether dogs dream, if they recognise themselves in the mirror or understand what they're seeing on television or if they are more intelligent than cats. Stanley Coren brings decades of scientific research on dogs to bear in his unprecedented foray into the inner lives of our canine companions, dispelling many common myths in the process. In a conversational format with illustrations, Coren answers approximately 75 questions often asked of him during his nearly fifty-year career as a dog researcher, combining the authority of an expert with the engaging delivery of a guest at a cocktail party.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Bookish Thoughts... Oct. 23 2012
By Reader Writer Runner TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
In Stanley Coren's latest addition to his string of wonderful books, he answers a number of questions from dog owners about how their four-legged friends think and act.

How well can a dog taste? Does genetics determine a dog's personality? Why do dogs roll in garbage? Coren answers such questions in 3-4 pages, drawing on scientific studies to enhance his responses. He also includes a section on various approaches to training dogs such as clicker training, behavior capture, lure training, physical prompting, and shaping; he succinctly defines each method, explains how it works, and discusses its pros and cons.

A very informative, easy read for any dog lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars What your dog would tell you if he or she could Aug. 2 2012
By George Hariton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Stanley Coren has written a number of wonderful books about how dogs think and act. This little book asks and answers a number of questions that most dog owners, and others, have asked themselves. For example, do dogs understand what they see on television? Answer: Most dogs don't -- the "flicker rate" is too high and distracts them. But as the picture gets better, more dogs will start watching. HD TV should prove very popular.

There are many other questions, e.g. How good is a dog's sense of taste? (Not that great) Does genetics determine a dog's personality? (In part) Why do dogs roll in manure and garbage? (We're not sure, but perhaps to camouflage their own smell so that they can hunt better). Each answer runs to three or four pages, explains what is going on, and draws on scientific studies that support what the author just said. This latter is a big improvement over most books on dogs that are based on just the author's own experiences.

The most helpful section for me was a series of sketches of various approaches to training dogs -- clicker training, behavior capture, lure training, physical prompting, and shaping. For each, Coren succinctly explains what it is, how it works, and what are the positives and negatives.

A very informative read, and a very easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about our good friends Aug. 26 2012
By Arctic Voice Earl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There seem to be more and more books about dogs these days, but this one stands out. You can tell that Professor Coren loves his three dogs and wants to help us learn more about these special animals.

The use of concise questions and answers helps the reader. You can start anywhere and quickly learn what you need. And many answers are based on the latest scientific findings.

In the few weeks that I've had the book, our Greenland Husky "Avu" started licking herself and me more and more. So I went to a question on dog licking. Got my answer before Avu finished licking my arm.

Then I saw her sleeping and twitching right near my sofa. So I looked in the book for information on "Do Dogs Dream? More help there.

I would also recommend this book to anyone who might be thinking about adopting a dog. And those who had a dog pass away and are wondering about getting another one.
This book can help in so many ways!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff July 19 2012
By Penny Thoughtful - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm not even a dog person, but I can't put this book down. Did you know that scientists have conducted personality tests on dogs to study breed temperament? Or that if your dog is terrified of the smell of toast, you probably shouldn't pet her?

I can't wait until the cat version of this book comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative for both a lifelong dog owner and the new dog owner Jan. 6 2013
By Kochava - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Analyzes the science and history of dogs to answer many of my questions about my dogs. Each question is self-contained, making it an excellent reference book to keep around. The questions were good choices, but I thought of 1 or 2 other questions I'd have liked to see. Was a great introduction to dogs for my non-pet-owning husband and in-laws. As a lifelong dog owner and a dog trainer, even I learned a great deal. Highly recommend getting a copy of this book to keep rather than borrowing it.
