Product Description

In the current climate of mistrust people are not just tired of cute advertising and glib PR spin; they are openly hostile. People have grown disillusioned and distrustful ''and if people don't trust you, it is very difficult for them to hear what you are saying. You can't buy credibility or invent it overnight. You have to earn it. You have to establish your reputation carefully and over time.

InDo the Right Thing, public relations professional Jim Hoggan has boiled the best lessons of an award-winning career into 200 readable and practical tips on how to make yourself understood in a noisy and confusing world, and especially how to gain and maintain public trust''not with press releases and spin, but by doing the right thing. This is 'news you can use,' a collection of easy-access advice outlining techniques have proven 'right' for Hoggan clients and will work for you in framing your message, courting media coverage, building a good media relationship, communicating in crisis, planning for crisis management, communicating with investors, using social media to move your message from confrontation to conversation, making the most of every presentation, knowing your audience, recruiting friends and influencing critics, and communicating with your employees.

For those who want to dig deeper into the public relations strategies,Do the Right Thingdelves into some worrying research and case studies on how ' and how badly ' the PR industry has lost the public's trust. It then looks at the emergence, and the importance, of social media and at the best current research on communications strategies including storytelling, framing, dialogue and persuasion.

Do the Right Thingis a book for everyone who cares about his or her reputation, personal or corporate. It's a guide for every person or company that cares about communicating credibly with a larger audience. The tips, techniques and tactics, developed over three decades, are as useful, as effective, and, especially, as concise as possible. Read it knowing that Jim's own PR reputation is built on performance. He has shown time and again that if you want employee loyalty, consumer trust, and a degree of public regard, you have to earn it, nurture it and maintain it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book, Sep 18 2010
Anyone who cares about democracy and the way we get information in the world today needs to read "Do the Right Things" by Hoggan and Littlemore. They clearly describe how public relations should be used (to "do the right thing"), how we can figure out what the "right" thing is, and how the principles of public relations have been misused to persuade the public that the global climate crisis is not real.

I've assigned "Do the Right Thing" as a textbook in my university public relations course. It's an easy -- yet dramatic -- read. My students enjoy the book and find the stories compelling. I've also read Hoggan and Littlemore's book "Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming," which is a more-detailed approach to the same subject.

Reading this book will help you better understand how it is that the vast majority of climate scientists believe there is a greater than 90 percent chance that the earth is warming and that human behavior is responsible -- while most Americans do not. Why the disconnect? This book will help you connect the dots.

5.0 out of 5 stars PR tips that make sense, Oct 8 2009
By
This book is a great how-to guide explaining basic strategy, background, and the big ideas of PR. It includes tips for things like how to organize a news conference and how to use social media. I would reccomend it to anyone who is studying communications or PR (or interested in entering the field), running a business, or simply people who want to communicate well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read for those who want to be wise to a wise society, Sep 13 2009
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Do the Right Thing: PR Tips for a Skeptical Public (Paperback)
Damage control, creative lying, spin - Public Relations has become a more and more tainted concept. "Do the Right Thing: PR Tips for a Skeptical Public" is a guide for public relations professionals who want to improve their own and their company's image in the face of a public which has been led through the motions so many times that they won't give most PR professionals the time of day anymore. "Do the Right Thing" is well worth the read for those who want to be wise to a wise society.
